Luminar Neo , a new creative image editor which empowers visual storytellers to bring their boldest ideas to life. Luminar Neo builds upon the unique, purpose-driven, AI editing technologies for which Skylum has become known for.
“As the latest member of the Luminar family, we designed Luminar Neo to allow artists to take on more challenging image creation work and achieve results which often seem unattainable,” said Dima Sytnik, co-founder and CPO of Skylum.
Luminar Neo is meant to be an application that offers more customizability, and that builds upon the company’s LuminarAI software. The two programs will be sold side-by-side.
Luminar Neo will ship with several new features, including image layers, background replacement, relighting options, dust removal and more. The software analyzes each image to recognize the depth of the scene and its contents, which allows for precise control.

AI Assistant maps natural-language questions to real tools and previewable settings. Nondestructive Catalog, layers and masks support fast creation. Standalone mode integrates with Photoshop, Lightroom Classic and Photos. Camera coverage, presets and LUTs are broad. Folders map to disk while Albums organize virtually; edit history and sync adjustments suit rapid social, travel, portrait and landscape delivery.
Cons
- Hardware demand is meaningful: 8 GB is only minimum, while large RAW, layers, generative AI and batch export favor 16+ GB and SSD; macOS below 12 cannot run this build. AI Assistant, generative and some advanced tools depend on internet, account and subscription/Upgrade Pass rights. Generated text, edges, repeated textures and implausible detail require review. Catalog backup excludes originals; folder actions affect disk. There is no real-time computer sync and Mac/Windows Catalogs are incompatible. Plug-in mode often round-trips TIFF and Photos has no Catalog tools. Keywords, tethering, soft proofing, prepress and team DAM are shallower than Lightroom Classic, Capture One or Photoshop.
Installation steps
- Luminar Neo 1.26.0 requires macOS 12+, an 8th-generation Intel Core i5 or Apple M1/M2/M3/M4, 8 GB RAM (16+ recommended), 10 GB free space, 1280×768, and preferably an SSD. Install and activate through a Skylum account. Create a dedicated Catalog and never place originals inside its folder. Test 10–20 RAW/JPEG copies with Develop RAW, layers, masks, Sky AI, Erase, generative tools, AI Assistant and export. AI Assistant accepts action and how-to prompts in Presets/Edit; preview its three suggested adjustment sets before applying. Quit Photoshop, Lightroom Classic or Photos before installing optional plug-ins from Luminar Neo > Install Plugins. Plug-in mode may receive a TIFF; use standalone mode when the original RAW pipeline matters.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, run File > Catalog > Backup and use Show in Finder to back up the entire parent Catalog folder. A Catalog backup contains edits, thumbnails, flags and history—not original photos. Copy all originals to a second medium and export critical TIFF/JPEG renders, checking dimensions, ICC, EXIF and names. Record the Skylum account, activation seats, extensions, LUTs, presets and plug-in hosts. For migration, copy both Catalog and originals while preserving structure; a Mac Catalog cannot open directly on Windows and does not sync in real time. Test restoration, uninstall each host plug-in through Install Plugins, then remove the app. Never delete the Catalog before verification.
Common errors and fixes
- Lost Edits/exclamation marks usually mean a folder was moved, renamed or an external disk disconnected while Neo was closed. Remount it and use Locate Image/Folder; matching uses filename, pixel dimensions and creation date. For slow launch, stalled AI or export freezes, preserve 16+ GB working memory, 10+ GB SSD space, close heavy apps, reduce batches and clear Catalog Cache; 1.26.0 fixes several macOS export freezes/crashes. Photos extension has no Catalog tools and Photoshop/LrC often sends TIFF, so open RAW standalone. If AI Assistant/generative tools fail, verify network, Skylum sign-in and subscription/Upgrade Pass rights; inspect generated edges, text, hands and repeated texture. Catalog folder actions affect the real disk, and Move to Trash moves the original—it is not Remove from Album.
What changed in this version
- Luminar Neo 1.26.0 introduces AI Assistant in Presets and Edit. Action prompts such as “Enhance this photo” return three tailored adjustment sets with live previews; how-to prompts such as “How do I remove this object?” provide steps and buttons that open the relevant tools. Treat it as guidance, not an unattended final-delivery system, and record prompts separately from human finishing. New cameras include Canon EOS R6 Mark III/C50, Fujifilm X-T30 III, Leica M EV1/Q3 Monochrom and Sony DSC-RX100 VIIA. macOS fixes cover export freezes, large Luminar Mobile imports, Space publishing status/crop dimensions and multiple crashes, with broader performance improvements.
