It suits Apple-only photographers and creators who want fast culling, batch color and synchronized nondestructive edits across Photos and external files. Choose one primary library: Photos+iCloud for family/mobile images, Files+project folders for client RAW; do not cross both paths for the same batch. Use dual original backup, ratings/flags, small-batch preset tests, per-image mask review, high-quality masters and monthly original export. Compare Lightroom for large cloud catalogs/cross-platform collaboration, Lightroom Classic for local catalogs, print and metadata, Capture One for tethering/commercial color, Pixelmator Pro or Affinity Photo for layered composites, and Darkroom for another lightweight Apple Photos workflow. AI is a starting point; inspect skin, product text, sky/tree edges and repeating texture at 100%.

Cons
- Apple-only prevents one consistent workflow in Windows/Android teams. Photos and Files paths make it easy to misunderstand where originals, edits and deletion sync live. iCloud Optimize Storage may retain only previews, requiring original downloads before offline/batch export. RAW support depends on Apple system camera RAW, so new bodies, special compression and lens corrections may lag. It lacks Capture One’s professional tethering, color and Sessions, and Lightroom Classic’s print, map, mature keyword hierarchy and large offline Catalog. It is not a full multilayer compositor like Photoshop/Affinity Photo. AI Repair, denoise, upscaling and masks can create texture, edge or face artifacts. Renamed external volumes, cloud placeholders and permissions can make files unavailable. License, iCloud quota and sharing permissions remain separate concerns.
Installation steps
- Photomator 3.4.14 for Mac requires macOS Ventura 13 or later. It can run on Intel Macs that support Ventura and is optimized for Apple silicon, Core ML, Core Image and Metal. Large RAW, Super Resolution, Denoise and batch export benefit from 16 GB+ RAM and ample SSD/iCloud capacity. First choose a data path: opening from the Photos browser synchronizes nondestructive edits back to Apple Photos/iCloud Photos; opening from Files directly manages images on the Mac, external drives or cloud providers. Do not treat these as one library. Duplicate 20 RAW/JPEG/HEIC samples and test Photos and Files paths, ratings/flags/rejects, RAW development, Subject/Sky/Background masks, Repair, Denoise, Super Resolution, batch presets and export. Grant Photos, folder and removable-volume access. Preserve a camera-card copy and ensure iCloud originals—not only optimized previews—are downloaded before production.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, inventory Photos-path and Files-path work separately. For Photos, wait for iCloud Photos sync, then archive both unmodified originals and high-quality TIFF/JPEG renders with edits for critical albums; record albums, ratings, flags, rejects, titles and dates. A Photos Library database alone is not an original backup. For Files, copy originals, Photomator nondestructive edit data/sidecars when present, presets, LUTs and batch workflows while preserving relative folders. Test external-drive work offline with only the archive connected, checking RAW, masks, crops and export. Copy both archives to a second medium and sample dimensions, profiles, count and byte size. Remove through the App Store. Do not delete Photos Library, iCloud originals, external files or app support until verified. Removing the app does not cancel iCloud/shared-album permissions or a subscription.
Common errors and fixes
- Low-resolution image or stalled editing: force-download the original in Photos/iCloud, keep the Mac powered, awake and online, and check local/iCloud capacity. Do not batch export while Optimize Mac Storage has not fetched originals. External-drive image offline: remount the same volume name, grant Files and Folders/removable-volume permission, then reopen from the original path; do not re-import a second edit record. Photos and Photomator differ: verify the same asset/edit branch, wait for sync and restart both. A Files-opened image is not automatically the same Photos item. RAW black/color problems depend on system Camera RAW/Core Image support; verify the exact camera/compression and test a preserved DNG copy. Before batch application, test a duplicate subset and exclude crop, Repair and masks when inappropriate. Inspect AI/Repair at 100% around hair, reflections and repeating texture, correcting with Clone/Brush. For shifts, choose sRGB/Display P3 and HDR/SDR deliberately, embed the profile and review in the target app.
What changed in this version
- Photomator 3.4 adds cross-device culling: star ratings, Favorite/flagging, rejection and advanced Mac filtering bring selection into the native photo browser before editing. Build 3.4.14 is a maintenance point in that line. The core remains dual Apple Photos/native-file-system paths, 750+ RAW formats and Apple ProRAW, nondestructive color, automatic Subject/Sky/Background masks, gradient/brush/color-range local adjustments, Repair/Clone, ML Enhance, Denoise, Super Resolution, Smart Deband, ML Crop, LUTs and batch workflows. Ratings and flags help culling, but test rejection/deletion behavior with disposable samples under Photos/iCloud; “rejected” never proves an image is backed up or permanently deleted.
