Save milestone PXDs, record template fonts/resource rights and inspect ML at 100% on dark/light backgrounds. Choose Photoshop for standard PSD, complex prepress, automation and the broadest plug-ins; Affinity Photo for subscription-free photo/design depth; Photomator for Apple Photos and batch RAW; Lightroom for large catalogs; Acorn for lighter pixel basics. Reopen deliveries and verify dimensions, alpha, ICC, text, vector outlines and video frame rate.

- The native macOS interface is easier than traditional pro editors while combining pixel, vector, text, shape, video and RAW layers. PXD preserves full layering and nondestructive color/effects. Apple silicon, Metal and Core ML make ML Enhance, Denoise, Super Resolution, Remove Background and Repair responsive. Templates, mockups, design tools and social sizes accelerate small-team output. PSD, PDF, SVG, HEIC, TIFF, PNG, JPEG and OpenEXR provide exchange. RAW can remain a compositing layer rather than being flattened first. Color/effect layers can target multiple layers. The Photos extension and Photomator iCloud round-trip suit Apple workflows. The standalone purchase does not mandate an ongoing subscription.
Cons
- PXD is proprietary; Photoshop, Affinity and Photomator cannot preserve all layers, and Photomator opens layered PXD flattened. PSD/PDF/SVG round-trips are not equivalent for text, smart objects, effects, masks, CMYK, video and some blends. There is no Lightroom/Capture One-style Catalog, batch culling, keywords or professional tethering. Complex prepress, channels/spot colors, scripting and plug-in ecosystem trail Photoshop. ML can invent texture, halos and bad edges. Template/mockup fonts, placeholders and rights need self-management. Multiple RAW/video/effect layers consume RAM and SSD. Camera RAW varies by model/compression. Mac-only teams need exchange formats for Windows. iCloud placeholders, missing fonts and damaged app containers can impair old work.
Installation steps
- Pixelmator Pro 3.8 requires macOS Monterey 12 or later, ships as a universal Intel/Apple silicon app and is optimized for Apple silicon, Metal and Core ML. Large PXD files, RAW layers, many effect layers, video and high-resolution mockups benefit from 16 GB+ RAM and ample SSD scratch space. After installation, build copied sRGB, Display P3 and CMYK-delivery samples. Open RAW/JPEG/HEIC/PSD/SVG/PDF/PXD and verify RAW adjustments, ML Enhance/Denoise/Super Resolution, Remove Background, text, vectors, masks, effect layers, transparent PNG, layered PSD and PDF/SVG export. Check the exact camera and RAW compression mode; brand support does not imply every HE/HE*, high-resolution or compressed RAW variant. Copy mockup placeholders, fonts and licensed resources into the project folder. A layered PXD opens flattened in Photomator, so preserve the authoritative layered master in Pixelmator Pro.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, separate every job into source assets, layered PXD master and deliverables. Confirm image fills, placed layers, video, fonts, LUTs, mockup placeholders and external resources remain reachable; embed critical assets or copy them into project Assets/Fonts/Video folders. Save a new milestone PXD, then export layered PSD for interchange, flattened TIFF/PNG for long-term viewing, PDF/SVG for vector delivery and full-size JPEG. Reopen every format and inspect masks, blends, text, alpha, profile and video timing. Archive custom templates, mockups, color/effect presets, shapes, brushes and a shortcut manifest. For iCloud documents, Download Now—cloud placeholders are not archives. Copy to a second medium and test offline before App Store removal. Do not delete Application Support/Containers before user resources are verified. Autosave and Versions are recovery aids, not project version control.
Common errors and fixes
- PXD cannot open/damaged: duplicate it before any attempt, confirm iCloud finished downloading, file size is stable and storage is healthy, then use File > Open in the same version rather than Recents. If needed, restore Time Machine/iCloud Versions/milestones and retain crash logs. PSD round-trip changes occur because Pixelmator effect/color layers, text, video, RAW layers, shapes and some blends are not one-to-one with Photoshop. Keep PXD authoritative and inspect every PSD layer. RAW black/color shifts: verify exact 3.8 camera compression support and test a copied DNG while preserving RAW. ML Denoise/Super Resolution wax, halos or invented texture: compare eyes, hair, text and regular patterns at 100%, reduce strength or mask selectively. Remove Background edges need black/white background review and manual mask painting. For Metal corruption/crash, disconnect displays/plug-ins, restart and isolate with a small file. For missing template fonts or wrong ratios, install licensed fonts, use Replace Image and inspect placeholder crop/export dimensions. Test short video with fixed canvas, duration and frame rate before final export.
