Description

PatterNodes is a tool for creating graphical patterns, animations, gradients, or illustrations based on repetitions. This is done by defining a sequence of steps, a recipe of sorts, that describes the pattern. Each pattern element or operation is represented by a little panel called a node, and the nodes are then linked by connections drawn between them.

As the nodes can be freely combined and connected, this gives you a very flexible and powerful interface.

While this interface requires a different way of thinking, it also offers a lot of benefits compared to traditional Illustrator-type editors. Most importantly it enables you to use sliders to instantly change any aspect, like color, spacing, scaling, rotation or repetition count of any part of the pattern without having to undo/redo any steps. You can also specify animation value ranges for any of these parameters.

The resulting pattern tile is always shown in the bottom preview view, repeated and updating in real time with any changes, giving you instant feedback of what the end result will be.

To make pattern creation easier PatterNodes also includes a lot of nodes that automatically perform common tedious tasks like repeating elements at the tile edges to make the pattern seamless, or randomizing different aspects (like color, position, rotation, etc.) of the elements in a pattern to give it a little more life.

Finally, when you’re done you can simply copy the pattern tile into whatever illustration or graphics application you use, or export it either as vector graphics or a bitmap image file. Animations can be exported as GIF, QuickTime MOV or numbered PNG or JPG files

Why we recommend it

Recommended for designers producing repeatable patterns, packaging textures, motion graphics and parametric illustration. Workflow: define artboard/tile/units; name and group nodes; expose key parameters; lock the random seed; run a 3×3 boundary test; validate SVG/PDF/PNG; set animation fps, duration and loop; keep an image sequence as the high-quality master; verify in the destination app; archive .pnds, assets, manifest and SHA-256. Choose Affinity Designer, Adobe Illustrator or VectorStyler for direct vector editing, and Hype for timeline-led interactive animation.

Pros

  • A non-destructive parametric graph preserves reusable design logic, while sliders explore colour, spacing, scale, rotation and repeat count immediately. Live tiled preview, seamless patterns, randomisation and animation of parameters suit generative work. It exports vector SVG/PDF as well as PNG, GIF, MOV and image sequences; expressions and data workflows support auditable design recipes.

Cons

  • Node thinking has a learning curve, and large graphs become difficult to read and memory-heavy. It is not a general Illustrator replacement and lacks full prepress, CMYK/font packaging, video editing and audio tools. Linked assets/fonts can break, random processes need recorded seeds, and complex SVG support varies between target apps. EPS workflows are unreliable on macOS 14 and later. Licence validation may require a network connection.

Installation steps

  1. Patternodes 3.3.3 requires macOS 10.15 or later. Duplicate each .pnds project before upgrading and archive linked SVG, PDF, bitmap, font and data-table assets. Open a small sample first and verify graph connections, live tiled preview, expressions and abs(-12)=12, then set explicit artboard, tile dimensions and units. Record random seeds and parameters, and inspect a 3×3 or 5×5 repeat for edge seams. For animation, define frame rate, duration, loop, dimensions, alpha and colour settings, then validate SVG/PDF/PNG plus GIF/MOV or a numbered image sequence. On macOS 14 and later, prefer SVG or PDF instead of EPS as the interchange master.

Uninstallation steps

  1. Before removal, archive .pnds files, linked assets, fonts, data tables, random seeds, animation settings and graph dependency notes. Export editable SVG/PDF, final PNG and an animation master or image sequence. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for deliverables, reopen an offline copy and render a representative frame to prove that relative-path assets are present. Store licence/order records separately, then remove any login item and the app.

Common errors and fixes

  1. If connections are hard to select, first check socket types; 3.3.3 improves hover/click hit detection and also fixes Tab becoming trapped in disabled value fields. Open-subpath SVG transforms were fixed, but still inspect viewBox, transforms, masks, filters, text and fonts. macOS 14 removed system EPS support, so erratic EPS import/export should be replaced with SVG/PDF. Seams usually come from stroke width, antialiasing, fractional pixels, out-of-bounds elements or wrong edge repetition. Preserve random seeds. Check export presets for size, scale, colour and alpha mismatches; use MOV or an image sequence when GIF palettes band. Large repeat counts and graphs increase memory use and export time.

What changed in this version

  1. Version 3.3.3 (2025-02-28) adds abs() to expression fields and math nodes, improves connection hover/click hit detection, fixes Tab becoming trapped in disabled value fields, and fixes SVG parsing for transformed open subpaths. Node-based patterns, seamless tiling, randomisation, live preview and animation export are established features rather than new 3.3.3 claims.
