HyperDither uses an elegant color reduction (dithering) routine to turn color or grayscale images into black and white or grayscales. The visual effect produced by this technique creates rich, velvety tones, and is higher-quality than the “Diffusion Dither” method offered by Photoshop.

 

HISTORY :

In the early 1980s, while developing the graphics technology for the first Macintosh, Bill Atkinson (HyperCard, QuickDraw, MacPaint) discovered a very elegant filter to convert greyscale image data for display on the Mac’s 1-bit black-and-white screen.

 

Later, this graphics routine was implemented as an option in Apple’s HyperScan software, connecting early Macs to flatbed scanners, and nowhere else. HyperScan and the excellent Atkinson dithering routine were subsequently unavailable for many years—but not forgotten!

Pros

  • Atkinson/Classic’s crisp, high-contrast grain suits classic-Mac, early desktop-publishing, pixel-art, screen-print/newsprint and constrained-display aesthetics; it deliberately differs from smooth grayscale. The 2.0 series also offers other diffusion methods and 2–256 gray levels for comparison between strict 1-bit and softer tone. Brightness, contrast, sharpening and Styles are adjusted in one document and reusable, avoiding repeated cross-app exports. A document workflow preserves parameters, while PNG/TIFF support lossless downstream work. Version 2.0.3 adds Apple-silicon support while retaining 64-bit Intel and macOS 11+, and local processing suits sensitive images.

Cons

  • Dithering is lossy tonal quantisation and cannot recover colours/details removed by black/white or limited-gray output; always retain the source. The pattern depends on final pixels, viewing distance and medium, so non-integer scaling, browser interpolation, printer screens and dot gain alter it. Atkinson’s contrast can sacrifice midtones and may not suit skin, sky or soft gradients. Version 2.0.3 has no batch processing and lacks later colour dithering, palettes and indexed 8-bit PNG, limiting volume work. It is not a full editor; masks, retouching, layout and professional separations belong elsewhere. The interface is English only. Revalidate old documents/Styles on the target macOS, printer or device.

Installation steps

  1. The site package is HyperDither 2.0.3, officially requiring macOS 11+, with Apple-silicon support and 64-bit Intel compatibility. Work on a copy. Crop, size, expose and locally contrast the source before import. Dither at or near final pixel dimensions because later scaling damages the dot pattern. Compare Classic/Atkinson with the other diffusion methods available in the 2.0 series, starting at 1-bit black/white or a small grayscale count, then tune brightness, contrast, sharpening and levels. Inspect at 100% for blocked shadows, broken highlights and unwanted texture in skin/gradients. Save useful parameters as a custom Style and preserve the document, then export lossless PNG/TIFF. Review at actual size in the destination web, printer or LED/laser workflow. Version 2.0.3 does not include later colour dithering or indexed 8-bit PNG features.

Uninstallation steps

  1. Before removal, retain the original, preprocessed master, HyperDither document, custom Styles, final lossless output and destination proof. Record algorithm, grayscale count, brightness/contrast/sharpening, input/output pixels, colour space, scaling method and printer/device settings; a dither pattern is difficult to reverse-engineer visually. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for source, document and exports, then open at 100% in an independent viewer with smoothing disabled. For print/fabrication, preserve paper/ink, screen, device resolution, threshold and test strip. The 2.0 line removed batch processing, so an unsaved queue is not an archive. Copy styles/projects to independent storage before quitting/removing the app; capture settings and export styles before clearing preferences.

Common errors and fixes

  1. If output is nearly all black/white, inspect source exposure and levels first, then reduce contrast, adjust brightness or increase grayscale levels rather than only swapping algorithms. Moiré, bands and regular noise often come from JPEG blocks, printed halftones, display subpixels or repeated scaling; descreen/denoise and resample once to final size. A blurry export may be viewer interpolation—inspect at 100% or integer zoom with smoothing off; browser CSS scaling also changes the texture. Dark prints need a paper/ink-specific curve and test strip because screen pixels do not model dot gain. For vanished lines or broken text, increase source resolution, thicken strokes or mask regions instead of global sharpening. Export failures require writable destination, free space and standard PNG/TIFF. Use 2.0.3 on M-series. Batch processing is absent; process individually or use another tool.

What changed in this version

  1. Official HyperDither 2.0.3 changes are Apple-silicon support, UI fixes and an updated support URL. It builds on the complete 2.0 rewrite: a modern document editor, several popular diffusion methods, 2–256 gray levels, custom Styles, optional document workflow and 64-bit compatibility. Version 2.0.1 fixed image export/default documents and made Classic the new-document default. The 2.0 line removed long-broken batch processing. Colour dithering, colour palettes and indexed 8-bit PNG arrived later and are not attributed to 2.0.3.
