Death or Dishonor is a new Country Pack for Hearts of Iron IV, and expands upon players’ ability to experience history’s greatest...
- Intel, 64-bit processor
- OS X 10.11 or later
Description
Years before Europe went to war, Japan’s imperial ambitions targeted the divided Chinese Republic. Crippled by political paralysis and centuries of fitful development, China is still not a pushover.
With vast reserves of manpower and resources, not to mention a giant landmass, the Republic of China and its temporary ally, the Communists under Mao, can withstand another aggressor. There have been, after all, very many.
From the convoy attacks in the Battle of the Atlantic to the fierce carrier battles on the Pacific front, the Second World War saw naval innovation in both tactics and technology. The war at sea takes center stage in Hearts of Iron IV: Man the Guns , a new expansion to Paradox Development Studio’s popular strategy wargame.
Design your own ships and refit older models. Alter your convoy routes to avoid hungry wolf packs. Embrace or circumvent naval treaties and deal with the diplomatic consequences.
Man the Guns also introduces new alternate history paths for the major democracies of the war and gives the freedom loving nations of the world more freedom to act before the war forces their hand.

Editor-checked details
Recommended for World War II history, industrial logistics, force design and long sandbox campaigns. Compare Crusader Kings III for character stories or Stellaris for space empires. Treat Ventura 13 and 8 GB as the practical Mac starting point and verify Intel graphics; because no official Apple-silicon tier exists, test a low-speed new campaign first. Workflow: reserve 15 GB; back up saves/launcher/playsets; record 1.19.2, checksum and SHA-256; run a mod-free new game; test production/supply/Army HQ/save; copy the old save; restore DLC/mods one by one; verify identical multiplayer builds. Preserve the old campaign and use the official 1.19.1 rollback if needed.
Pros
- Command almost any World War II nation while national focuses, diplomacy, industry, research, logistics, intelligence and land/naval/air forces share one strategic model. Division/equipment design, production efficiency, supply, air superiority and naval control interact, making a successful plan rewarding. Historical and alternate paths, co-op/competitive multiplayer, custom rules and major mods provide exceptional replayability. Pausable real time permits detailed control and official support is long-lived. English, Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean interfaces are official.
Cons
- The learning curve is steep: combat width, supply, production, air missions, naval detection and armor/piercing take time to master. Many country paths and mechanics are paid DLC, making a complete collection costly; major updates can temporarily break mods and old saves. Late-game unit counts increase CPU, memory and UI load, while multiplayer demands identical versions, DLC and mods. Official Mac specs still use older Intel-era graphics and give no Apple-silicon tier. Traditional Chinese is not official, and the war, ideology and historical violence themes do not suit everyone.
Installation steps
- This page covers Hearts of Iron IV 1.19.2. The current official Mac minimum is macOS Ventura 13, Intel Core i5 at 2.60 GHz, 4 GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 6970M and 2 GB base storage; recommended is i5 at 2.90 GHz, 8 GB, Radeon R9 390M or GeForce 750M with 1 GB VRAM. DLC, mods and saves grow well beyond that, so reserve 15 GB. Back up saves, launcher database, playsets/load order, DLC and custom templates; record 1.19.2, checksum and installer SHA-256. First launch without mods and use a new campaign to test map, focuses, production, supply, land/naval/air forces, Army HQ, pause and save/load. Restore DLC and mods one at a time. The old OS X 10.11 note is not valid for the current official build.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, pause outside a peace conference, multiplayer hot-join or major battle resolution, make a new manual save and quit normally. Back up local/cloud saves, launcher database/settings, playsets, exact mod versions/load order, DLC, division and ship templates. Label 1.19.2, nation, date, rules, checksum and SHA-256, then test one offline load. Preserve both copies during cloud conflict. After reinstalling, verify version/checksum in a mod-free new game, then copy the old save and restore identical DLC/mods. If 1.19.2 disrupts an old campaign, the official release provides rollback to 1.19.1 to finish it.
Common errors and fixes
- Blank launcher or broken playset: confirm Ventura 13, free space and SHA-256, quit fully, preserve then rebuild launcher cache/database, and retest without mods. Checksum/OOS: every player needs 1.19.2 with identical DLC, mod versions and order. This patch fixes pending hot-joins not appearing, clients entering the lobby incorrectly, and two late-game/session-history OOS cases. For crashes, remove mods first; 1.19.2 fixes gain_xp on a fleet without an Admiral and assigning a deployed Field Marshal to an Army Group. Offensive-line and Army HQ issues are also corrected. Late games benefit from fewer background apps and 8 GB rather than the 4-GB floor. Apple silicon is not named in the official Mac specification, so do not infer support from chip age alone.
What changed in this version
- Version 1.19.2 is the pre-summer stable maintenance update for Thunder at Our Gates. It rebalances the Expeditionary Leader, Swiss casualty trickleback and multiple Indonesian, Australian and Siamese values; adds an event-sound toggle plus East Timor/Nusantara interactions; fixes two crashes and late-game multiplayer OOS; and improves hot-join, offensive lines, Army HQ, Division Designer, commander UI and AI defense/Pacific behavior. An official 1.19.1 rollback is available for old saves. This page covers only public 1.19.2, excluding the later Summer Open Beta branch.
