Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who enjoy space themes, systems-driven stories, long empire management and repeated starts. Begin with a small/medium galaxy, fewer AI, default difficulty and no mods; complete one focused campaign before adding crises, DLC, mods or multiplayer. Before every update copy the user folder; record version/checksum/DLC/mod/order; rotate three manual saves; do not rely only on autosave/cloud; advance a copied save for several months and fight a battle after update; confirm events, automation and performance before resuming the main campaign. Compare Endless Space 2 for turn-based tactics, Europa Universalis IV for historical grand strategy, Sins of a Solar Empire for more immediate fleets/economy, or Galactic Civilizations for another 4X approach, while checking Mac, mod and multiplayer support.
Pros
- It combines 4X exploration, empire building, economy, diplomacy, war and event-driven stories in procedural galaxies. Ethics, authority, traits, origins, technology and ship design create high replay value. Real-time-with-pause supports strategic and tactical management, while anomalies, archaeology, crises and diplomacy produce emergent campaigns. Mods and multiplayer extend its life and DLC can be selected by mechanic. The 4.4.6 Rift/automation fixes are especially valuable for long campaigns relying on science-ship and fleet automation.
Cons
- The learning curve is steep as economy, population, fleets, diplomacy and many DLC systems stack up, and tooltips do not always explain changes. Large galaxies and late-game simulation stress CPU, memory and thermals; this Intel build adds Rosetta/mod uncertainty on Apple silicon. Updates, DLC and mods alter rules/checksum, old-save compatibility is not guaranteed and multiplayer breaks on load-order differences. The DLC catalogue is expensive and mechanics may depend on specific packs. Automation reduces clicks but can make weak choices; 4.4.6 fixes only two specific automation bugs.
Installation steps
- The site build is Stellaris 4.4.6 “Pegasus” (checksum fdde). Confirm macOS 10.15+, 8 GB RAM and at least 10 GB base storage; the site package with DLC is about 22.59 GB, so reserve more for extraction, saves, mods and updates. The official Mac baseline is Intel i5-4570S and GT 750M/equivalent 1 GB VRAM. This build has no official native Apple-silicon specification, so validate M1/M2/M3/M4 through the Intel/Rosetta path. Back up saves, user_empire_designs, settings, crashes and mod configuration under `~/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris`; record DLC inventory, checksum, mod versions/order and installer SHA-256. First launch without mods, create a small 4.4.6 galaxy, and test map, save/load, audio/input, diplomacy, combat, science-ship automation and Astral Rifts. Enable only mods explicitly compatible with 4.4.6 in small batches, create a new test save after each batch and confirm checksum. Multiplayer peers need the same game build/checksum and identical mod set/order, with host DLC rules understood. Copy old saves and never overwrite the sole copy. Before a serious large galaxy, monitor month-end ticks, memory, thermals and late-game simulation speed.
Uninstallation steps
- Quit the game and launcher and let cloud sync settle, but never use cloud as the only backup. Copy all saves, empire templates, subscribed/local mods, load order, settings, screenshots and crash logs. For critical saves record game 4.4.6, checksum fdde, DLC/mod manifest, date and SHA-256. Open at least one copied unmodded test save offline and verify files from another path. Disable automatic updates before removing the game/launcher. Decide separately whether to touch `~/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris`, which holds saves and user content; for a clean reinstall rename it as backup instead of deleting it. Workshop unsubscribe does not guarantee mod retention, so archive a manifest; DLC entitlement is platform-account based. Uninstall cannot downgrade a cross-version save or repair data modified by mods. Retain the 4.4.6 package, checksums, mod archives and rollback notes until representative saves load, advance a month, run combat and save in the replacement environment.
Common errors and fixes
- For launch crash/black screen, disable all mods/overlays, move settings.txt, shader cache and a copy of the user folder so clean data can regenerate; verify files/free space, Rosetta, resolution and graphics. A checksum other than fdde usually means mods, altered files or a different build—confirm 4.4.6, DLC, mod versions/order and compare after a clean launch. Multiplayer peers need identical checksum/mod/order and understood host-DLC rules; inspect firewall/platform networking. For a save crash, copy it and return to the game/mod combination that created it; do not repeatedly cross-save the sole copy. Version 4.4.6 fixes automated science ships becoming permanently lost in Astral Rifts and automated ships abandoning tasks while evading enemies—confirm build/checksum and test a new save. Late-game slowdown is often simulation-bound: reduce galaxy/AI/habitable-world/mod scale and inspect month-end autosave, pathfinding and population; graphics settings cannot remove every CPU bottleneck. Missing UI/events require disabling UI/localisation mods and file verification. Missing DLC requires platform entitlement/download/launcher checks; never mix channel files.
What changed in this version
- Stellaris 4.4.6 “Pegasus” is a hotfix after 4.4.5 with official checksum fdde. It fixes automated science ships becoming permanently lost in Astral Rifts, stranding scientists and leaving MIA entries in the Outliner. It also prevents automated ships from switching automation off and abandoning construction, anomaly/special-project research, Rift exploration or special orders when evading hostile fleets. Only these 4.4.6 hotfix changes are attributed here; later test branches or higher builds are excluded.
