Description

G oldie helps you easily visualize or calculate the golden ratio and many other proportions right on your screen.

Here are two ways Goldie can help you :

RULERS

• They overlay on your screen allowing you to visually reference the golden ratio, the rule of thirds, the diagonal rule of thirds and the baroque proportions on anything you are working on or curious about.

• They all come in six colors to choose from.

GOLDEN CALCULATOR

• This tool accurately calculates the golden proportions from any ratio point, giving you exact measurements with ease. This comes in handy for all layout design and typesetting, both on or off screen.

Under the hood :

• Packed with the native mac interactions you are used to (ex. hold down “Shift” for snap-rotate or dragging)

• Advanced settings that make the app work best for your needs.

• Custom shortcuts to seamlessly blend into your workflow.

• A beautiful dark mode for every pixel of your dark side.

Goldie was designed by designers for designers to not only be functional and feel intuitive at first use.

We can’t wait to see how Goldie helps you make the world a more proportionate place!

Why we recommend it

Recommended for graphic, UI, web, photo and type designers during early composition and manual review. Workflow: define content goals/constraints; choose Thirds, Golden or Baroque candidates; freeze window, display scaling and artboard; explore hierarchy with the overlay; record exact dimensions and units from the calculator; place an SVG guide in the source; adjust against real content, responsive sizes and accessibility; remove guides for independent review; archive source, calculations, manifest and SHA-256. Aspect Ratio X suits pure proportion maths; Figma/Sketch native grids suit UI; Photoshop/Pixelmator Pro suit actual cropping; PhiMatrix offers deeper golden-ratio analysis.

Pros

  • It overlays Golden, Golden Thirds, regular Thirds, Diagonal Thirds and Baroque proportions over any app, avoiding repeated switching between Photoshop, Figma and a browser. Adaptive rulers provide themes and can flip, rotate, lock and target multiple displays; menu-bar access and custom shortcuts are quick. The calculator returns exact golden proportions from any ratio point, including off-screen typography work. Drag-and-drop SVG can turn a temporary reference into a project object. The native app is small, and its App Store privacy label says no data is collected.

Cons

  • Golden proportion is one composition method, not a guarantee of quality, and it does not replace grids, content hierarchy, brand rules, responsive breakpoints, readability or accessibility tests. Screen overlays are affected by display/window scaling and manual stretching and are unsuitable for precision acceptance. It does not crop, align objects, generate CSS, calculate pixel diffs or record decisions. Six themes are limited for engineering/CAD grids, modular systems and custom ratios. Global shortcuts may conflict, while multi-display/fullscreen spaces need checks. An imported SVG can be distorted, so users must preserve its ratio.

Installation steps

  1. Goldie 2.3 requires macOS 12.4 or later. Apple M1 compatibility was documented earlier, and the listed build also identifies 64-bit Intel. Open rulers over non-sensitive content and test Golden, Golden Thirds, regular Thirds, Diagonal Thirds and Baroque themes, plus flip, lock, reset, Shift 45-degree snap rotation and monitor selection. Audit system, browser and design-app global shortcuts before assigning custom ones. Validate the calculator with a known case: short side 100 gives a golden long side of about 161.803; record units, direction and rounding. After dragging an SVG guide into another app, verify artboard scale, coordinates and accidental non-proportional distortion.

Uninstallation steps

  1. Goldie must not be the sole specification record. Before removal, document the ruler theme, reference dimension, calculator inputs/output, units, rounding, ruler orientation, display and final design decision. Archive SVG guides with design sources. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for actual design and delivery files—the overlay state itself is not hashable evidence. Record custom shortcuts/preferences only as reference, ensure reproducible guides exist inside the production app, remove any login item and then the app. Position, lock state and recent calculations do not replace layout specifications, accessibility measurements or acceptance records.

Common errors and fixes

  1. If a ruler cannot be controlled on a secondary display, reselect its screen from an anchor-point menu or preferences and check display arrangement/scaling. If it intercepts clicks, confirm its lock/interaction state or hide it temporarily. For snap rotation, hold Shift while rotating from the anchor; axis-locked dragging also depends on the correct Shift gesture. Dead shortcuts usually conflict with Google Slides, a design app or macOS; choose an unused combination. Switch themes/colours or light/dark mode for contrast. A wrong ratio often means long side, short side or split point was reversed, or units were mixed. Restore proportional scaling for distorted SVG. An overlay is a visual composition guide, not a pixel-calibrated measuring instrument.

What changed in this version

  1. The official Goldie 2.3 note contains only bug fixes and performance improvements; no unverifiable tool is invented. Tooltip repair belongs to 2.2.2, shortcut repair to 2.2.1, while native UI, quick actions, ruler lock, drag-and-drop SVG, advanced settings and Dark Mode came with 2.0; multiple displays and the ruler set arrived earlier. After 2.3, regress all six rulers, adaptive contrast, calculator, flip/lock/reset, Shift gestures, custom shortcuts, multiple displays and SVG drag/drop.
