Description

Old World is a historical strategy game where you lead your empire through multiple generations, building a grand legacy to last beyond your own years. This is an era of great leaders, from the revered to the feared. Which will you be?

Marry for politics, raise your heirs, and manage your relationship with the families of your kingdom. In the fast and furious world of kings and queens, family matters.

• Each of the 7 kingdoms has four noble families that provide various benefits when put in charge of your cities.

• Manage family ties through events, actions, and marriages to keep them happy and reap additional benefits. Upset them, or make them too powerful, and you risk their ire.

• Maintain a strong family unit, or distract yourself with more illicit adventures.

The world is full of great characters with distinct personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. Use them to forge your kingdom, defend your borders, and build ties with other leaders.

• Seek out and recruit famed warriors, philosophers, builders, and more. Have them tutor your children, lead your armies, and further your reign.

• Different personality archetypes allow your court members to perform different tasks in similar roles. Find the right combinations to take full advantage of governors, diplomats, spymasters, and even your spouse.

• Characters develop new personalities and traits over time, growing old, gaining experience, and finally falling ill and passing away, leaving room for the next generation.

Unsettled tribes, barbarian marauders, and remnants of previous cultures are all waiting in the vast unexplored wilderness.

• Discover artifacts and great heroes of the past at ruins scattered across the map.

• Experience over 3,000 unique events inspired by history and mythology.

• Contact with foreign dignitaries triggers event chains, stories, and courtroom drama.

• Pursue ambitions and legacies related to conquest, development, faith, and more.

• Historically inspired scenarios, weekly

Why we recommend it

Recommended for Civilization-style expansion players who want characters, families and succession to alter strategy. Use a smaller map/lower difficulty first and learn Orders, city specialization and family opinion before enabling many DLC/mods. Safe order: backup; 1.0.81366/SHA-256; macOS/Metal/GPU; language; tutorial; Orders/cities; family/succession; combat/events; save/GIF; multiplayer; mods one at a time. This build was later designated the official legacy branch for pre-renderer-upgrade compatibility.

Pros

  • It deeply joins 4X empire management with generations, marriage, succession and court relationships: leaders age, change, fall ill and die, so strategy must outlive them. The Orders economy forces real tradeoffs among building, exploration, diplomacy and war. Seven kingdoms, noble families, 3,000+ events, ambitions and historical scenarios create replay value. Single-player, online/local PvP and co-op, cross-platform multiplayer, Workshop, editor, Cloud and weekly challenges are extensive, and all five page languages have official interface/subtitles.

Cons

  • System density is high: cities, Orders, families, characters, succession, religion, diplomacy and events compete for attention. Late large maps, AI turns and mods increase waiting and memory use. AMD Radeon Macs are excluded and the old 10.13 channel line is unreliable; the current baseline is macOS 12. Native M1 support does not prevent 8 GB Apple-silicon systems from memory pressure on large/modded games. Frequent events and deaths disrupt plans, and multiplayer sessions are long.

Installation steps

  1. This page covers channel version 1.0.81366. Follow the current Mac table: macOS 12+, i5-4570-class quad core, 8 GB RAM, Metal-capable 2 GB GPU and 10 GB storage; recommended is i5-8600K-class six core, 16 GB RAM and 6 GB GPU. AMD Radeon Macs are explicitly unsupported. Native M1 support exists; validate large maps separately on M2/M3/M4. Back up saves, mods, DLC and weekly challenges and record SHA-256. With a new game, test all five page languages, tutorial, Orders, families/succession, events, combat, saves, GIF export and multiplayer joining.

Uninstallation steps

  1. Before uninstalling, end the turn and return to menu, waiting for local/Cloud, achievements and multiplayer state; do not force-quit during AI processing, event choices, hotseat switching or mod updates. Back up saves, Hall of Fame, mod list, DLC, 1.0.81366 and SHA-256. After reinstalling, disable mods and use a copy to finish a turn, event and battle, save/reload and export a GIF, then restore mods/DLC one at a time.

Common errors and fixes

  1. For launch failure, confirm macOS 12+ and a Metal GPU; AMD Radeon Macs are officially unsupported. Use the native binary on M1–M4 rather than Rosetta. For large-map slowdown, lower shadows, animation and map size and watch memory pressure on 8 GB systems. For client asserts or save trouble, disable every mod and load a backup/previous autosave. Large-team join screens, hotseat switching and turn labels are 1.0.81366 fix areas, so verify the build. GIF export also received a Mac path fix; check destination permissions. Disable colorblind filters and UI mods for color/text anomalies.

What changed in this version

  1. Version 1.0.81366 adds Point Symmetry for mirrored multiplayer maps with opposite-corner starts; Healing Shrines grant Healer to all units including non-promotable ones; and a new Ballista icon. Balance changes include Heliopolis Orders per shrine from 1 to 0.5, Mourning no longer causing illness, clearing zero-progress queues to cover debt, AI forfeiting a camp site when the player contributed more, and event tweaks. Fixes cover Mac/Linux GIF paths, Hall of Fame, diplomacy in No Events, AI/load asserts, hotseat, multiplayer join, turn labels, colors and tooltips.
