Description
Against a darkening background of famine, disease and war, a new power is rising in the great steppes of the East. With a million horsemen at his back, the ultimate warrior king approaches, and his sights are set on Rome…
The next instalment in the multi award-winning PC series that combines turn-based strategy with real-time tactics, Total War: ATTILA casts players back to 395 AD. A time of apocalyptic turmoil at the very dawn of the Dark Ages.
How far will you go to survive? Will you sweep oppression from the world and carve out a barbarian or Eastern kingdom of your own? Or will you brace against the coming storm as the last remnants of the Roman Empire, in the ultimate survival-strategy challenge?
The Scourge of God is coming. Your world will burn.
Apocalyptic destruction mechanics
Wield the ferocious power of fire in battle to set buildings ablaze and terrify defenders, or wipe entire cities and regions from the face of the campaign map with the new raze mechanic.
Legendary start position
Playing as the Western Roman Empire you will begin with vast territories under your control, but weakened by political in-fighting and threatened on all sides by enemies, your dominance will quickly become a struggle to survive.
Overhauled game mechanics
Improved core gameplay and UI through the latest optimised and modified Total War game mechanics, including politics, family tree, civic management and technological progression.
Incredible period detail
With new period-specific technologies, arms and armaments, religion, cultures and social upheaval, Total War: ATTILA delivers an authentic experience of this ominous chapter of our history.
Outstanding visual fidelity
Improvements and optimisations to both campaign and battle visuals create a chilling vision of a looming apocalypse and the ruin of the civilized world. With breath-taking scale, atmosphere and improved graphical performance, witness the end of days and the rise of a legend.
WHAT’S NEW
Editor-checked details
Recommended for Apple-silicon players who enjoy historical grand strategy, complex empire management and direct real-time command. New players should learn economy, food, public order and replenishment with a steadier faction before attempting the Western Roman survival challenge. Use this order: back up saves; verify 1.6.0, DLC and SHA-256; run a small battle at defaults; test turn save/load; tune UI scaling; raise unit size and graphics one item at a time; add mods last. Compare Total War: ROME II for another classical campaign, MEDIEVAL II for a medieval setting, or Total War: WARHAMMER III for fantasy factions and heroes, after checking each title’s current Mac requirements.
Pros
- The campaign combines diplomacy, economy, religion, family politics, migration, disease and settlement management, while real-time battles provide direct control of large armies. The Western Roman opening is a distinctive multi-front survival challenge. Fire and settlement razing reinforce the apocalyptic setting, and nomadic versus settled factions create different strategic rhythms. The modern Mac port is native to Apple silicon with improved performance and UI scaling. Eight optional DLC packs expand campaigns and cultures without requiring every pack at once.
Cons
- The learning curve is steep: economy, public order, food, disease, religion and multi-front war apply pressure simultaneously. Huge battles and unit sizes demand GPU, memory and thermal headroom, so base M1 systems may need substantial reductions. Intel Macs are unsupported. Long campaigns depend heavily on save integrity; mods, missing DLC or mismatched builds can destabilise old saves. Eight DLC packs are separate purchases, making the complete set costlier than the base game. Its war, plague and imperial-collapse themes are not a relaxed management experience.
Installation steps
- This page is pinned to Total War: ATTILA 1.6.0. Confirm Apple M1, M2, M3, M4 or later and macOS 12.0+; Intel Macs are unsupported by this modern Mac release. Leave at least 20 GB beyond the game footprint for DLC, patches and campaign saves. Back up campaigns, battle replays and settings, and record 1.6.0, enabled DLC and installer SHA-256. Start with default graphics and UI scaling; test menus, campaign map, end turn, real-time battle, save/load and sleep recovery. Validate stability with a smaller unit size before raising resolution, unit size, shadows and anti-aliasing one item at a time. Existing Steam owners should confirm account entitlements; the eight DLC packs are separate and must not be assumed to be part of the base edition.
Uninstallation steps
- Quit and ensure the turn save has completed. Copy campaigns, autosaves, manual saves, battle replays, graphics settings and the mod list separately. Label critical saves with faction, turn, 1.6.0, DLC and SHA-256. Open a copied save offline, complete one turn and reload it, checking diplomacy, armies, settlements and family tree. For crash diagnosis, disable mods and rename settings/cache folders rather than deleting the only save. Ensure no cloud-sync or download task is active before removal. Uninstalling does not revoke DLC/Steam entitlements or remove Workshop subscriptions; handle those separately while retaining at least one recoverable save.
Common errors and fixes
- If the game will not launch, confirm Apple silicon and macOS 12+, verify SHA-256/files, disable overlays and every mod, then restart; compatibility mode cannot make Intel supported. For an end-turn stall, preserve the pre-failure save, disable mods, reduce background load and retry an earlier manual save without repeatedly overwriting one slot. For low FPS or heat in large battles, connect power and reduce unit size, resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing and corpse lifetime; base M1 should prioritise stable frame time. For tiny or clipped text, use Feral UI scaling and test it separately from system/game resolution. If a save reports missing DLC, check account, launcher and enabled packs before writing to it. Diagnose mod crashes with a clean copy, then restore only items confirmed for 1.6.0.
What changed in this version
- Total War: ATTILA 1.6.0 is the site channel build. Feral released the modern macOS port on 2026-07-02 and explicitly lists native Apple-silicon support, improved performance and UI scaling. Existing Steam owners can access the Mac build, while all eight DLC packs are available separately. It brings the turn-based empire campaign and real-time battles to modern Macs. This page remains scoped to 1.6.0 and attributes no later patch content to it.
