After years of tireless explorations, brave Vikings have discovered a new land filled with mystery, danger and riches: Northgard .
The boldest Northmen have set sail to explore and conquer these new shores, bring fame to their Clan and write history through conquest, trading, or devotion to the Gods.

THE STORY MODE: RIG’S SAGA
The Viking High King is murdered and his REGAL HORN is stolen by a man named HAGEN. This event kickstarts a saga that will take RIG, his son and heir accompanied by his right-hand man BRAND through the new continent of NORTHGARD, where he will make new friends and foes and discover a much greater threat than HAGEN, and the reasons behind his father’s assassination.
In order to complete the 11 chapters campaign, the player will have to master the specificities of all 6 clans and tame the unforgiving wilderness of Northgard.

Recommended for players who prefer resource planning, territory control and medium-paced strategy over high-frequency unit micro. Stabilize food, wood and happiness before colonizing key-resource zones; pause military expansion each autumn and budget winter consumption. Start with a straightforward clan and story/low AI, then learn one victory route before ranked play. Safe order: backup; 4.0.19/SHA-256; fresh unmodded map; winter; combat; save reload; old save; Conquest/Bifröst; mods; multiplayer.
Pros
- It compresses RTS into readable zone expansion: every tile, worker assignment, food/wood reserve and winter creates a clear trade-off. Conquest, Fame, Lore and Trade victories support different plans on the same map. Distinct clans, the 11-chapter Rig’s Saga, Conquest/Bifröst, AI and ranked multiplayer provide longevity. Pause and restrained army sizes reduce micro burden, all five target languages are available, and mods/dedicated servers broaden play.
Cons
- Zone and population limits make expansion deliberate, and long games repeat scouting, colonizing, job changes and winter stockpiling. Many clans, lore paths, relics and victories can punish newcomers through hidden production loss or premature armies. Multiplayer depends on matching builds, servers, network and ready-check; mods add loading/save compatibility risk. Mac requirements still use old Intel-era model years with no modern chip matrix. Although 4.0.19 fixes various crashes, it does not prove every platform fault is gone.
Installation steps
- This page covers Northgard 4.0.19. Steam’s official Mac minimum is macOS Mavericks 10.9 or later and a 2012+ MacBook, MacBook Pro or iMac, with 2014+ recommended; it provides no modern Intel/Apple-silicon matrix. Back up Steam Cloud, local campaign, Rig’s Saga, Conquest/Bifröst, clan unlocks, multiplayer rank, mods, keybinds and graphics, record 4.0.19/SHA-256, and allow more than the channel’s 2.76 GB package for installation/saves. First launch an unmodded solo game and validate map generation, colonization, jobs, winter economy, combat and save reload, then test multiplayer lobby and old saves.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, finish the current month/combat, save manually, return to the menu and wait for Steam Cloud. Do not force-quit during map generation, Conquest results, ranked ready-check or a save indicator. Record campaign chapter, Conquest/Bifröst node, clan/difficulty, multiplayer rank, mod list, 4.0.19/SHA-256 and Steam account. After reinstalling, disable mods, create a temporary solo save and reload after restart before restoring mods and long saves one at a time. During a cloud conflict preserve a copied local save with the verified newer timestamp.
Common errors and fixes
- For startup/old-save crashes, disable every mod, verify files and test a fresh unmodded map to separate save/mod faults; 4.0.19 says various crashes were fixed but does not guarantee every old save. For endless generation reduce map size, remove mods and regenerate. For matchmaking failure confirm region, identical build, ready-check and firewall; official notices have acknowledged service trouble in China and P2P may still have latency. If an M-series Mac freezes during combat, lower quality/resolution, close background apps and validate a small skirmish first. Winter collapse usually means insufficient food, wood or happiness, or expansion that outpaced production; stockpile and reassign nonessential workers.
What changed in this version
- Official 4.0.19 (build 43313), dated March 3, adds ranked lobby-finder security and a penalty for missing ready-check. Owl relic placement is optimized; Veterans/Source of Urdarbrunnr and Branch of Yggdrasil Conquest interactions are fixed. Raven Frozen Sea relics, Snake Scorched Earth resources on Nidavellir and a Dragon Conquest crash when recruiting a free Warchief are fixed. It also restores missing Korean localization, fixes various crashes and adds general optimizations. Validate those clan cases, ranked lobby, Korean text and unmodded save/reload.
