Recommended for individuals and small teams using a small consistent icon set for local project folders. Define no more than 6–8 colours/symbols and retain clear folder names plus Finder tags. Workflow: create an empty test folder; design a 1024px transparent source; inspect small size and light/dark; save a template; apply to a copy; test Finder views; verify ZIP/cloud/external-drive migration; then apply to production; record inventory, source manifest and SHA-256. Finder tags/system custom folders suit simple colour coding; Iconize Folder may suit batch rules; Affinity Designer, Pixelmator Pro or Photoshop suit professional icon artwork.

- It combines a folder base with images, text, drawing and shapes, offering eyedropper, fill, line, pen, eraser, transparency, shadow, gradient, reflection and curved text in one workflow instead of manual Get Info pasting. Retina, SVG, multi-object editing, rotation/resizing, Dark Mode and undo/redo support visual coding by client, status, department or content type. Results appear directly in Finder without a background service. The app is small, supports older macOS, and its App Store privacy label says the developer collects no data.
Cons
- Custom icons are visual only: Finder search, automation and other systems do not understand their colour/text semantics, so teams need a naming/tag standard. Applied artwork may be a flattened composite that cannot be edited like its source, requiring templates. Resource forks/extended attributes can be lost through some network filesystems, cloud services, archive tools or cross-platform copies. Finder cache may refresh late and sidebars, open/save panels or third-party managers may differ. It does not batch-manage metadata, permissions, tags, encryption or backups; too many saturated icons can reduce recognition and accessibility.
Installation steps
- Folder-Factory 7.12.0 requires macOS 10.13 or later. Duplicate a disposable folder, record its default icon, then practise images, text, shapes, transparency, shadows, gradients and Retina preview. Prepare licensed fonts and high-resolution transparent PNG/SVG art; use simple, high-contrast marks that remain legible when small. Preserve a reusable source/template before applying the result to production folders. A custom icon changes Finder appearance only—it does not classify, encrypt or back up contents. Inspect icon, list and column views in light/dark appearance, then copy or ZIP a test folder through the intended cloud/external drive to verify whether its icon survives migration.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, preserve editable sources, PNG/SVG art, font/licence details, colour values, target-folder inventory and application date. To keep icons, sample them in Finder and the real sync/backup destination. To restore defaults, use the app’s reset method or select the icon in Finder Get Info and delete it, then verify critical folders. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for source artwork. Back up/hash folder contents separately—a custom icon is not integrity evidence. ZIP an empty decorated template folder and test restoration for future reuse. Remove the app only after this audit; never delete production folders merely to remove an icon.
Common errors and fixes
- If the blue default remains, switch Finder views or reopen the window; restart Finder/sign out only if cache refresh is needed, rather than repeatedly applying. Failure usually means a read-only folder, protected system location, unsupported network metadata or missing file permission. If cloud/another Mac drops the icon, the service may not preserve resource forks/extended attributes; transfer a ZIP of an empty template and test the destination first. For blur, use higher-resolution art and inspect transparency/Retina sizes. For clipped text, use the improved 7.12.0 font-size menu and test the smallest Finder size. Rebuild old work from saved sources because an applied composite may not retain separate editable objects.
What changed in this version
- Official 7.12.0 changes are only: improved Selection tool, improved font-size menu and issue fixes. SVG, Dark Mode, multi-object editing, text borders/backgrounds, image borders, rotation/resizing, line caps and gradient strokes predate it and are not mislabelled. Regress an older source containing an image, line, curved text and transparency: multi-select, move, copy, font sizing, undo/redo and application to a test folder. Inspect minimum/maximum Finder icon sizes and default-icon restoration.
