Description
Motorsport by its very nature is dangerous. DiRT 4 is all about embracing that danger. It’s about the thrill, exhilaration and adrenaline that is absolutely vital to off-road racing. And more than that, it’s about loving that feeling. It’s about pushing flat out next to a sheer cliff drop. Going for the gap that’s slightly too small. Seeing how much air you can get in a truck. They call it ‘being fearless’.
DiRT 4 also features a game-changing system called Your Stage; an innovative rally route creation tool that allows you to produce an almost-infinite number of unique stages at the press of a button.
You choose your location and set the route parameters, then Your Stage does the hard work to create a unique rally stage that you can race, share with your friends and then challenge them to beat your time.
Your Stage allows experienced rally players to create longer, more technical routes, whilst newcomers can create simpler shorter routes as they hone their skills.
With DiRT 4, Codemasters have sought to combine the levels of thrill and realism from last year’s DiRT Rally with the fearless excitement, accessibility and adrenaline-fuelled races previously seen in its critically acclaimed prequels DiRT 2 and DiRT 3.
Featuring classic rally racing that continues to build on the foundations set by the Colin McRae Rally games, the bruising contests from the official FIA World Rallycross Championship, the crazy battles of racing trucks and buggies, and the outrageous fun of open events in Joyride, players will face challenges from locations that span three continents.

Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who want to tune the balance between demanding rally simulation and arcade accessibility, especially with analog-trigger gamepads or wheels. In Academy, keep one front-wheel-drive car and adjust only steering saturation, dead zone and brake linearity. After three consistent finishes, reduce assists and move to rear/all-wheel drive and longer stages. Listening to co-driver calls matters more than staring at a minimap; finish reliably before chasing split times. Save a mapping backup whenever changing peripherals. Safe order: dual backup; 1.0.1/SHA-256; defaults; Academy calibration; short stage; damage/repair; reload; old save.
Pros
- It bridges DiRT Rally-style physical feedback and the accessibility of DiRT 2/3 through different handling approaches: newcomers can start with Gamer assists and Academy, while experienced drivers disable assists and tune cars. Your Stage generates many routes from location and route parameters, reducing repetition after memorizing fixed stages. Rally, official Rallycross, Landrush trucks/buggies, Joyride and career vary the pace; damage, timed repairs, co-driver calls and team engineers carry consequences beyond one stage. Feral supplies pre-game settings, wheel/gamepad support and diagnostic reports.
Cons
- The 38 GB footprint and discrete-GPU-class demand are high for older Intel Macs; minimum hardware needs substantial reductions in rain, snow, night lighting or multi-car Rallycross. Keyboard input is digital and cannot modulate throttle, braking or counter-steer as precisely. Wheels give the best experience but require time for mapping, dead zones and force feedback. Your Stage recombines existing road modules, so familiar corners eventually recur. Online challenges and sharing depend on service availability. The Mac port is from the Intel/Mojave era with no native Apple Silicon statement; modern-system stability needs separate validation.
Installation steps
- This page covers DiRT 4 1.0.1. Mac minimums are macOS 10.14.2, a 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM, GT 650M 1 GB/R9 M290 2 GB/Intel Iris Pro 5200-class graphics and 38 GB storage. Back up driver career, cars, team, engineers, sponsors, tuning, controller/wheel mappings, Your Stage routes, results and achievements, then record 1.0.1/SHA-256. In the Feral pre-game window, begin at 1600×900, medium shadows and 2× or disabled MSAA. Use DiRT Academy to calibrate steering, throttle, brake, clutch, dead zones and force feedback, then complete a short rally stage and verify co-driver calls, timing, damage, repairs, replay and save reload.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, finish the stage and return to the main menu, allowing career, vehicle damage, team and result data to write. Do not force-quit during finish results, repair countdown or controller calibration. Make a fresh manual backup, record event, car, funds, engineers and 1.0.1/SHA-256, and preserve saves separately from Feral preferences. Removing a preference directory can erase progress and the parent Feral folder may contain other games. After reinstalling, complete a short Academy test with default controls before restoring mappings and the old save, so a damaged configuration is not reintroduced.
Common errors and fixes
- If a wheel/gamepad is detected but throttle or brake does nothing, confirm it in the pre-game window and remove duplicate mappings. Bind pedals to analog axes and check inversion, saturation and dead zone. Straight-line weaving usually means steering linearity or dead zone is too aggressive; do not hide bad calibration with assists. For low FPS, reduce resolution, MSAA, night lighting, shadows and particles first, disconnect a second display, plug in power and close background apps. For crashes, generate DiRT 4 Report.txt from Feral Support and retain crash/hardware reports. If Your Stage sync or online challenges fail, check service availability; back up solo career and local routes separately. Apple Silicon has no explicit native support tier.
What changed in this version
- The site build is 1.0.1. No official public itemized notes were found that precisely match the complete Mac 1.0.1 number, so another platform’s patch or launch content is not misrepresented as this fix, and no higher version is disclosed. Verifiable scope includes Rally, Rallycross, Landrush, Joyride, DiRT Academy, career, team/repairs, vehicle tuning, damage, Your Stage route generation, wheels/gamepads and replays. Acceptance covers displayed 1.0.1, pre-game settings, Academy calibration, short-stage timing, damage/repair and reload.
