Installation steps
- InDesign 21.0–21.2 supports macOS Ventura 13, Sonoma 14, Sequoia 15 and Tahoe 26, with at least 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended), about 4.5 GB installation space and an SSD. Intel multicore and M1/M2/M3/M4 are supported, but v21 will not install on a 2013 Mac Pro or earlier system and does not support macOS Monterey 12. Apple silicon must run natively because v21 does not support Rosetta. Install and activate through Creative Cloud. Before upgrading, duplicate `.indd`, save IDML/PDF, and use Package to collect Links, Document Fonts and printing instructions. Back up styles, Preflight profiles, PDF presets, scripts, plug-ins, workspaces and shortcuts. Configure recovery, units, dictionaries, color, display performance and Preflight, then test representative files for font reflow, notes, TOC, cross-references, Data Merge, InCopy, scripts and PDF/EPUB output.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, Package every important project and retain the source `.indd`, backward-compatible IDML, final press PDF, low-resolution proof and output report. Confirm links are complete, font licenses permit handoff, and cloud documents, Projects and InCopy Assignments are synchronized/checked in. Back up user dictionaries, Find/Change queries, workspaces, shortcuts, scripts/startup scripts, plug-ins, color settings, PDF/EPUB presets and Preflight profiles. Uninstall through Creative Cloud rather than deleting the app. For troubleshooting, preserve the `Version 21.0` preferences folder and start with fresh preferences and no third-party plug-ins. Remove old caches and plug-ins only after a representative publication opens, reflows, saves, packages and exports correctly.
Common errors and fixes
- For text reflow, missing glyphs or overset after opening, do not replace every font blindly. Match exact font versions/variable axes, language dictionaries, paragraph Composer, baseline grid and plug-ins; use Preflight and Story Editor to locate overset. Relink original assets in Links rather than treating previews as press images; Package deliveries and inspect effective PPI, color space and crop. On Apple-silicon launch crashes, ensure Open using Rosetta is off and remove old Intel-only plug-ins—v21 does not support Rosetta. If network files open read-only, disable the InDesign QuickLook Extension on macOS and copy/package locally; work locally when Egnyte documents crash. Update to Sonoma 14.5+ for crashes involving long Story Editor content or paragraph shading. If PDF export fails, export page ranges to isolate damage and inspect fonts, links, transparency, interactive objects and disk space. In Acrobat preflight bleed, page boxes, spot colors, overprint, font embedding, tags and reading order.

The 21.0 release introduced Flex Layout for frames that adapt to content, real-time text co-editing between desktop InDesign and InCopy on the web, native math-expression formatting, PDF-to-editable-InDesign conversion, an enhanced Context Bar, accessible EPUB context breaks using `<hr>`, refreshed Media/HTML Preview/Tool Hints panels, Adobe Express templates and Projects collaboration. PDF conversion, Flex and generated structure still require page-by-page human review and should not be treated as equivalent to the source.
