Description

Adobe Character Animator is a desktop application software product that combines live motion-capture with a multi-track recording system to control layered 2D puppets drawn in Photoshop or Illustrator. It is used to produce both live and non-live animation.

Character Animator imports layered Photoshop and Illustrator documents into puppets which have behaviors applied to them. The puppets are then placed into a scene, which can be viewed in the Scene panel and Timeline panel.

Rigging is set up in the Puppet panel, though basic rigging is fully automatic based on specific layer names like Right Eyebrow and Smile. Properties of selected elements can be examined and changed in the Properties panel, including behavior parameters.

Live inputs include a webcam (for face-tracking), microphone (for live lip sync), keyboard (for triggering layers to hide/show), and mouse (for warping specific handles).

Final output of a scene can be exported to a sequence of PNG files and a WAV file, or any video format supported by Adobe Media Encoder. Live output can be sent to other applications running on the same machine via the Syphon protocol (Mac only) or Adobe Mercury Transmit on both Mac and Windows. Scenes can also be dropped directly into After Effects and Premiere Pro, using Dynamic Link to avoid rendering.

Why we recommend it

Best for explainers, live virtual hosts, social clips, course characters and creators turning existing PSD/AI artwork into performable puppets. Compare Moho Pro for conventional bone/keyframe 2D animation, Adobe Animate for vector timelines and frame-by-frame drawing, and After Effects for compositing, effects and motion packaging. First make a 20-second target-spec audition containing speech, blinks, head turns, dragging, alpha and audio, then choose rig complexity. Establish character naming/version rules and preserve source art, exported `.puppet` files and restorable project copies. During recording, lock camera, microphone, sample rate, lighting and Rest Pose; record separate takes. Before delivery, inspect alpha edges, A/V sync, peak level, frame rate and color in the target player.

Pros

  • Real-time 2D performance from a webcam and microphone is faster than frame-by-frame work; layered Photoshop/Illustrator art remains linked to puppet structure for design iteration; Face, Eye Gaze, Lip Sync, Dragger, Physics and other Behaviors combine with detailed controls; triggers, swap sets, replays and recorded takes support nondestructive performance editing; Starter mode is approachable while Pro mode exposes rigging, timeline and streaming; convenient After Effects, Premiere Pro, Media Encoder and alpha-channel delivery.

Cons

  • Quality depends on disciplined layer naming, rigging, camera lighting, microphone quality and repeated calibration—it is not automatic after import; complex puppets, several physics behaviors or high-resolution scenes consume substantial CPU/GPU and memory; automatic lip sync and eye motion still need cleanup, while profiles, occlusion, glasses glare and noisy rooms reduce tracking; 3D camera work, detailed frame-by-frame drawing and advanced compositing trail dedicated tools; Dynamic Link is version-sensitive; collaboration, relinking and migration require strict folder management; Creative Cloud subscription and Adobe-workflow dependence add long-term cost.

Installation steps

  1. Character Animator 25.0 runs natively on Apple silicon and supports Intel Macs with a 6th-generation-or-newer AVX2 CPU. The minimum is macOS Monterey 12, 8 GB RAM, 4 GB installation space and a Metal-capable GPU; 16 GB RAM and a 1080p display are preferable for production. Update macOS first and prepare a webcam, microphone and headphones. On first launch, grant camera, microphone and required-folder access only to a trusted build. Select the correct input devices in Preferences, create a short test scene, then calibrate Rest Pose, face tracking, eye gaze and visemes. Preserve layered PSD/AI masters before importing puppets and use stable, descriptive layer names. Keep projects, puppets, recordings and linked media in one backed-up folder. For Dynamic Link or Media Encoder delivery, align Adobe video-app major versions and validate picture, alpha, audio and frame rate with a ten-second sample first.

Uninstallation steps

  1. Before uninstalling, stop recording/streaming and use File > Copy Project to (or make a complete project-folder copy) to collect the project and linked media. Separately preserve custom `.puppet` files, layered PSD/AI masters, trigger settings, replays, audio, export presets and workspace notes. Open the copy and spot-check puppets, tracks and external links so the backup is demonstrably restorable. Encrypt or securely remove client/performer recordings according to their authorization. Uninstall through Creative Cloud without deleting project folders. For troubleshooting, record camera/microphone selections, permissions and preferences before resetting Preferences. After reinstalling, validate tracking, recording, Puppet Maker, Quick Export and Media Encoder with a copy before reconnecting production work.

Common errors and fixes

  1. No camera or microphone input: check Character Animator under macOS System Settings > Privacy & Security, confirm the device and sample rate in Preferences, and close conferencing/streaming apps that may own it; restart after permission changes. Drifting face, eyes or lip sync: use even frontal light, keep the full face visible, Set Rest Pose again, then inspect Face/Lip Sync strength, input level, viseme tags and puppet layers. Red missing media, blank or distorted puppets: relink PSD/AI sources, avoid moving dependencies, and inspect `+` independent layers, Origin, Handles, Tags and mesh settings. For lag/desync, reduce scene resolution/frame rate, disable unused Behaviors/background apps, use a wired microphone and local SSD media. For Dynamic Link/export failures, align Character Animator, After Effects/Premiere and Media Encoder major versions or use Quick Export/an intermediate file. macOS 15 may repeatedly request video-app permission; do not disable system security—retain permission and apply fixed OS/app updates. Since 24.0, Apple silicon no longer uses an Intel/Rosetta path, so replace or update old Intel plug-ins.

What changed in this version

  1. Character Animator 25.0 (October 2024) is primarily an improvements-and-stability release. The core workflow remains Starter/Pro modes, layered Photoshop/Illustrator puppet creation, Puppet Maker, face/body tracking, microphone-driven lip sync, triggers and replays, physics behaviors, timeline editing, scene cameras, live streaming, plus Quick Export, Media Encoder and Dynamic Link delivery. This generation formalizes a 6th-generation Intel CPU with AVX2 as the Intel floor and 4 GB Mac installation space. Apple silicon uses the native build; since 24.0 there is no supported Intel-under-Rosetta compatibility route. Version 25.0 does not reduce the need for project backups, disciplined source-layer management, permission/calibration checks and a sample export before final delivery.
