Editor-checked details
Recommended for fantasy armies, real-time battle and long sandbox campaigns. Compare Hearts of Iron IV for historical grand strategy or Crusader Kings III for character/dynasty stories. M1/8 GB is the floor; M2/M3 and 16 GB suit large campaigns better. Workflow: reserve 150 GB; back up campaigns/launcher/mods; record 8.0.1 and SHA-256; verify files; run a mod-free new campaign; test map/real-time battle/save; restore DLC/mods individually; wait for identical platform versions before multiplayer. On base M1, begin at 1080p with reduced shadows/unit size and FSR.
Pros
- It combines turn-based empire management with large real-time battles, where diplomacy, economy, settlements, heroes and army movement shape the battlefield. Faction mechanics, rosters, monsters, magic and Legendary Lords differ dramatically, while Immortal Empires offers a huge replayable sandbox. Scale, camera work, environments and audio are spectacular, with auto-resolve, pause and slow motion available. Co-op/competitive campaigns and mods extend longevity. M1 or later is explicitly supported, and English, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean interfaces are available.
Cons
- The 125-GB minimum grows with DLC, patches, mods and temporary update space, making downloads/backups expensive. Although 8 GB qualifies, large battles and long end turns on base M1 may need lower graphics/unit size or FSR. The Mac build is not M1-native, multiplayer does not cross-play with Windows, and Feral updates may arrive later, blocking sessions until versions match. Many factions/lords require earlier-game ownership or paid DLC, so a full collection is costly. Faction systems and battlefield micro have a learning curve; updates can break mods/saves, and mature violence/dark fantasy will not suit everyone.
Installation steps
- This page covers Total War: WARHAMMER III 8.0.1. Official Mac minimum is macOS 12.5, Apple M1 with 8-core CPU/7-core GPU, 8 GB RAM and 125 GB storage; reserve 150 GB for updates and DLC. Official support covers Macs released since November 2020 with M1 or better. Back up campaigns, battle replays, launcher settings, DLC and exact mod playsets/load order; record 8.0.1 and installer SHA-256. First disable mods and use a new campaign to test campaign map, end turn, auto/real-time battle, camera, magic, save/load and multiplayer lobby, then restore mods individually. Intel Macs with AMD GPUs may run but Feral says they do not consistently meet official support standards.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, make a new manual campaign save outside battle, siege, event choice or turn processing. Back up local/cloud campaigns, autosaves, replays, controls, DLC and exact mod versions/order. Label 8.0.1, faction, turn, Immortal Empires/Realm of Chaos, multiplayer state and SHA-256, then test an offline copy. Preserve both copies during cloud conflict and never overwrite the only modded campaign. After reinstalling, validate battle/save in a mod-free new campaign, then restore identical DLC/mods and copy the old save. Missing ownership of earlier games or DLC changes available factions.
Common errors and fixes
- Black screen, crash or campaign hardlock: confirm M1/8 GB/125 GB minimum and SHA-256, verify files, disable every mod/overlay, then lower resolution, shadows, unit size and anti-aliasing; AMD FSR 1.0 is available in pre-game options. 8.0.1 optimizes Slaanesh-corrupted regions and fixes hotkeys after dismissing White Tiger’s Calling with Esc, Tiger Court/Armies of Shang-Yang tour hardlocks, lost upgrades and narrative errors. It also corrects Sky Lantern Alchemist HP and Ogre Folly objectives. Mac multiplayer is not cross-platform with Windows; Mac/Linux updates can lag, so versions, DLC and mods must match. Due to online libraries, the Mac build is not M1-native despite requiring Apple silicon.
What changed in this version
- Hotfix 8.0.1 follows Update 8.0/Bhashiva and brings Bhashiva support to Mac/Linux. Campaign fixes optimize Slaanesh-corrupted regions and address lost hotkeys after White Tiger’s Calling, unrefunded Armies of Shang-Yang upgrades, false notifications, panel hotkey errors, interrupted Bhashiva dilemmas and scripted-tour hardlocks. Battle balance lowers multiplayer costs for dual-axe/stalker Tiger Warriors and Taoyan while improving selected stats. Ogre Folly objectives, Clawspeaker armor chain and Sky Lantern Alchemist HP are fixed. Changes from other patches are excluded.
