Workflow: define pixels/alpha; create MPB; keep source on the bottom layer; separate line, colour, text and finishing layers; test pressure/brush first; use selections/shapes for geometry; save a version before every merge; inspect edges, text and alpha at 100%; retain MPB and export PNG/TIFF master plus JPEG delivery; create manifest and SHA-256. Choose Krita, MyPaint, Rebelle or Corel Painter for mature painting, and Acorn, Pixelmator Pro or Affinity Photo for broader image editing.

- Its familiar lightweight-paint interface has a low learning curve while retaining layer order, visibility, alpha, merge and selection movement. More than 100 natural, decorative and blur brushes cover sketches, annotation and simple illustration, with opacity, pressure, radius and hardness controls. MPB retains layers, while PNG/JPEG/TIFF/BMP/GIF aid delivery. Lines, curves, shapes, text, fill and colour picking cover everyday small graphics. The app is small and its source lineage is published under GPL.
Cons
- “Pro” does not imply a complete modern studio: advanced colour management, RAW, CMYK prepress, vector objects, non-destructive filters, complex masks, brush authoring and cloud sync are limited or absent. Undo and selections are basic, merged layers are hard to recover, and MPB has little interchange support. Clipboard scaling/cropping and Apple silicon stability have historical user reports and should be tested. The channel build depends on Intel/Rosetta, the interface is mainly English, and large layered/blurred canvases may hit memory limits.
Installation steps
- The channel build of My PaintBrush 2.4.5 requires OS X 10.9 or later and an Intel 64-bit processor. Install Rosetta 2 on Apple silicon and prove stability with a small test. Back up MPB projects, fonts, palettes and source images. Create a canvas with explicit pixels and transparency; test brush, pencil, pen, airbrush, decoration, blur and eraser plus opacity, pressure, radius and hardness. Build at least three layers and verify order, visibility, alpha, merge, flip, selection movement and undo/redo; check tablet pressure in both macOS and the app. Reopen an MPB to confirm editability, then export PNG/TIFF for alpha, JPEG for background, and BMP/GIF for colour. When pasting, record source pixels and confirm there is no scaling or crop.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, retain editable MPB files rather than only flattened images. Archive sources, font list, palette, brush settings, canvas dimensions, layer order/alpha and final PNG/TIFF/JPEG. Create a manifest with app version, macOS/chip, tablet, colour space, formats and licensed assets, then calculate SHA-256 for MPB, sources and deliverables. Reopen an MPB offline, toggle a layer, add one stroke and export again to prove integrity before removing the app and preferences. BMP/GIF/JPEG do not replace the layered MPB master.
Common errors and fixes
- If clipboard paste zooms or crops, do not overwrite the source. Create a canvas with identical source pixels, import from a file, and compare Actual Size with Fit in Window. Users have reported paste-scaling trouble. Retina import cropping was fixed in an earlier release but still deserves regression testing in 2.4.5. For missing pressure, check tablet driver, privacy permission, the Pressure switch and brush type. Use PNG/TIFF for alpha and hide the background; JPEG has no alpha. If text crashes or ignores fonts, switch to a system font and save MPB first. Large canvases and repeated blur consume memory; save versioned copies before merging. Test Rosetta mode if Apple silicon hangs.
What changed in this version
- The official 2.4.5 note (2024-07-08) says only “fixed some bugs”, so no itemised fixes are invented. Historical regression cases include Retina imports cropped by half, a Big Sur text crash, unchangeable text font/size and Ventura compatibility; these are earlier fixes, not new 2.4.5 features. Multiple layers, 100+ brushes, MPB projects and multi-format export are established capabilities.
