Description
The Franchise Hockey Manager series returns for its 12th version in 2025-26, with new additions that will further expand on the most authentic hockey strategy gaming experience you can find.
Choose one of dozens of leagues around the world and select a team to guide to glory, including a chance at the ultimate prize: FHM12 is licensed by the NHL®, allowing you to take the reins of your favorite franchise to capture the Stanley Cup®. Or, take control of a national team and try for international supremacy.
You can also choose a historical game, where you can begin in any year in NHL® history, play in one of several historical minor leagues, or play in a legendary international tournament, including (new for this year) the World Championships as far back as 1929.
If you’d like to create your own customized league, you can do that, including allowing international play in the world you design.
If you’ve been playing FHM11 and can’t bear to part with your team, import that save into FHM12 and carry on with the addition of FHM11’s new features.
However you choose to play, you have control of your team and can oversee finances, select strategies, hire your staff, make trades, sign free agents, and draft the newest generation of stars as you try to build a championship team – and then make it into a dynasty!

Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who want data-led, long-term hockey management rather than immediate 3D control. Start with one primary league and a few background leagues, then reclaim finances, trades, training and tactics from delegation one area at a time. Save a baseline tactic set and use preseason training to define roles. Before trading, compare contract years, cap space, picks and future talent rather than current rating alone. After 12.4.40, test rosters, news filters, CSV and watchlists in a copy before choosing an old or new save. Safe order: full backup; 12.4.40/SHA-256; temporary league; old-save copy; online Team File.
Pros
- It combines licensed modern NHL play, dozens of world leagues, national teams, historical tournaments back to 1929 and custom worlds in one management model. Finances, trades, free agents, drafts, staff, tactics, preseason/targeted training, player generation and reports support long dynasties, and FHM11 saves can be imported. Saved tactic sets, news filters, watchlists and CSV exports suit data-heavy players and league operators. Steam Workshop, 183 achievements and single player add extensibility and long-term goals without requiring constant online play.
Cons
- The experience is dominated by tables, menus, text and a 2D match view, with a steep learning curve. Dozens of leagues, contract rules, roster rights and historical options make it hard for newcomers to know which settings matter. Simulating many active leagues slows daily processing and enlarges saves. English is the only official interface language; five localized articles do not imply in-game Chinese, Japanese or Korean. The official Mac requirement is Intel, creating architecture risk for Apple-silicon users. Roster updates and some fixes fully appear only in new games, forcing long saves to choose continuity over new data; custom databases, images and Workshop items can conflict after updates.
Installation steps
- This page covers Franchise Hockey Manager 12.4.40. Steam requires an Intel processor, macOS 10.11+, 8 GB RAM and 8 GB free space. No official native Apple-silicon support is stated, so M1/M2/M3/M4 compatibility is not confirmed. English is the only officially supported interface language. Fully back up league saves, custom databases, team/player images, tactics, training programs, exported CSV files and online-league Team Files, then record 12.4.40/SHA-256. Quit the game before installing over the existing copy; the developer says existing saves are compatible. First use a temporary league to validate simulation, save/load, rosters and match engine, then open the main save and check news filters, watchlists and CSV exports.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, stop simulation between schedule days, save manually and create a separate copy. Export the Team File before leaving an online league, and preserve custom databases, images, tactics, training, CSV exports, drafts and trade records. Record in-game date, league version, enabled leagues, roster cutoff, 12.4.40/SHA-256 and Steam account. After reinstalling, validate the database with a temporary game, copy the backup and open a duplicate. Confirm teams, contracts, schedule, draft picks, history and online permissions before simulating. Data-dependent fixes may require a new game; never overwrite a long-term save just to test them.
Common errors and fixes
- For launch failure or blank UI, verify an Intel Mac, macOS 10.11+, 8 GB RAM/free storage and 1280×768 display. Apple silicon is not an officially listed architecture, so Rosetta is not guaranteed. If an old save fails, duplicate it, match 12.4.40 and mod/custom-database versions, and remove recently added images/data while testing the copy. If rosters look unchanged, note the patch data cutoff; an old save does not rebuild every data-dependent item. Missing CSV output calls for checking folder permission and filenames, then exporting from the relevant league/screen. For online Team File signing failure, verify GM permission, upload/download order and server version. Reduce enabled leagues and retained history/logs, and save in stages, when long simulations stall.
What changed in this version
- The official March 19 update 12.4.40 adds the post-deadline roster set; seven CSV exports (player injuries/history, injury data, human manager, league awards/events and draft class); manager-news filters for PMs, news, trades, rumors, transfers, waivers, signings and extensions; add-all and clear-filtered watchlist actions; waiver simulation stops based on future talent; training ratings; updated WHL playoffs; league-value contract defaults for added leagues; better fictional international eligibility; and online GM staff signing/re-signing through Team Files. Existing saves are compatible, but data-dependent fixes may need a new game.
