- It combines digital painting and layered photo editing: pressure/wet brushes, smudge, heal/clone, perspective grids and mirror view suit illustration; groups, masks, adjustments, 27 blends and non-destructive effects suit compositing. GPU ArtEngine, 64-bit multicore and Metal target large canvases and multiple documents. Photoshop brushes, patterns, gradients, swatches and fonts can be imported, with PNG/JPEG/PSD/TIFF/PDF exchange. iCloud supports device handoff. The Desktop build supports Intel and Apple silicon and offers a lighter licensing footprint than large suites.
Cons
- PSD exchange is not complete Photoshop compatibility: smart objects, effects, colour modes, typography and plug-ins may rasterise or change. Unlimited layers and huge canvases remain bounded by RAM, GPU, swap and file formats. RAW is primarily import, not Lightroom/Capture One cataloguing, lens profiles and batch development. iCloud is convenient but not version control or the sole backup; conflicts/placeholders need management. Imported brushes may lose dynamics. Team review, DAM, scripting, prepress and accessibility are less complete than larger suites, and the App Store privacy label lists unlinked usage and diagnostic data.
Installation steps
- Artstudio Pro 5.2.9 Desktop requires macOS 11 or later and supports Intel and Apple silicon. Before updating, duplicate native projects and critical PSDs; export custom ABR/TPL brushes, PAT patterns, GRD gradients, ASE/ACO swatches and a TTF/OTF font inventory, and confirm iCloud files are downloaded. On copies, test Metal canvas, stylus pressure, groups/masks, adjustment layers, text, blends and undo history. Round-trip a PSD containing text, effects, masks and 16-bit imagery and compare every layer; PSD support does not mean every Photoshop feature is lossless. Define pixels, bit depth, ICC, transparency and destination, then export PNG/JPEG/PSD/TIFF/PDF and validate in the target tool.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, save every active native project to an explicit local archive and export layered PSD/TIFF plus flattened PNG/JPEG/PDF delivery or preview copies. Archive custom brushes, patterns, gradients, swatches, font licences, shortcuts and workspace settings. Ensure iCloud items are downloaded, not placeholders. Record canvas dimensions, bit depth, ICC, layer count, fonts/brushes and final export preset. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for sources and deliveries, then open a critical project from another account or offline disk and re-export it. Remove the app and optional caches only after recovery succeeds and unneeded file permissions are revoked.
Common errors and fixes
- If PSD effects or text change, inspect missing fonts, blend modes, adjustments, clipping masks and unsupported Photoshop-specific objects; preserve the original and rasterise only problem layers in a compatibility copy. Failed ABR/TPL import may reflect format versions or unsupported dynamics; test a small set and compare tip, spacing, pressure and mixing. For large-canvas stalls, reduce open documents, layers/history and huge brushes and check swap space—“unlimited layers” remains memory-bound. Temporarily disable Metal-related acceleration only to isolate artefacts, then regress normally. Colour mismatch requires ICC, Display P3/sRGB, bit depth and embedded-profile checks. Duplicate both iCloud conflict versions before merging. For white PNG backgrounds, inspect alpha, background layer and format.
What changed in this version
- The official Artstudio Pro Desktop 5.2.9 note says only “Minor bug fixes”; no specific feature or fix is invented. GPU ArtEngine, multiple documents, 256-Mpixel canvas, groups/masks, adjustment layers, effects, brush editor, ABR/TPL/PAT/GRD/ASE/ACO/font import, iCloud and multi-format export all predate 5.2.9. A separate cross-platform iOS/iPad listing mentions thumbnails and photo import/export delay, but that note is not attributed to Desktop. Regress a fixed PSD, brush pack and iCloud copy through open, save, thumbnails, import/export and colour.
