Why we recommend it

Recommended for players willing to study systems, accept failure and sustain 2–6-player co-op worlds. Start with default resources and generous rollback slots; solve light, food, revival and winter warmth before caves and bosses. Workflow: reserve 8 GB; back up Cluster/Master/Caves/mods; record 740477 and SHA-256; test a mod-free local world; add cave shard; join same-version friends; test linked items on a dedicated server; restore mods. Compare single-player Don’t Starve for narrative survival, Oxygen Not Included for engineering, or Terraria for multiplayer crafting after checking Mac support.

Pros

  • Hunger, sanity, health, seasons, temperature, darkness, bosses and renewable resources create a harsh but learnable survival loop; distinct character abilities make co-op roles meaningful. Surface, caves, ocean and long-running events provide goals, while generated maps and world settings offer high replayability. It supports private co-op, public/dedicated servers and solo play, with mature Workshop modding and long-term updates. The hand-drawn gothic style is distinctive, and English, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean have official interface, audio and subtitles.

Cons

  • Onboarding is sparse and death can cost resources/world progress; winter/summer, caves, bosses and shadow content often demand days of preparation. Server, cave shards, ports, tokens and mod maintenance are more complex than ordinary co-op, and mismatched client/server versions or mods block joining. Official Mac specs are old but explicitly discourage Intel GMA, Mac minis and early MacBooks; modern Apple silicon generally runs it, though the page still describes an Intel minimum. Many skins are tied to purchases, events or accounts. Long worlds and high entity counts increase save/server load.

Installation steps

  1. This page is Don’t Starve Together 740477, not single-player Don’t Starve. Official Mac minimum is OS X Lion 10.7.x, 2.0-GHz Intel, 4 GB RAM, an NVIDIA or ATI GPU, broadband and 3 GB storage; Intel GMA, Mac minis and early MacBooks are explicitly not recommended. The site DMG is about 3.11 GB, so keep 8 GB free. Back up surface/cave worlds, client/server mod lists, world settings, Klei account and skin entitlements; record 740477 and SHA-256. First disable mods and use a local world to test gathering, crafting, combat, seasons, death/revival and saving. Then test caves, co-op, dedicated server and account-linked items.

Uninstallation steps

  1. At a safe daytime camp, disconnect other players, save and shut down the server, and wait for surface/cave shards to finish writing. Copy Cluster, Master/Caves shards, client settings, modoverrides, server.ini, token configuration and mod list; label 740477, world day, characters, caves, server mode, last time and SHA-256. Keep server tokens private. Start both surface and caves from the copy offline, travel, craft and save again. Disable cloud sync only after quitting and preserve both conflict copies. Do not remove the only Cluster when uninstalling. After reinstalling, create a mod-free test world before restoring a copy; never overwrite under a different version/mod set.

Common errors and fixes

  1. For launch failure/black screen, verify 740477, space/SHA-256, remove client mods and disable overlays. Intel GMA, Mac minis and early MacBooks are in the officially discouraged group. For lag/disconnects, check broadband, ports/NAT/firewall and exact client/server version and mod parity. Cave startup commonly fails when Master/Caves shards, token or modoverrides disagree; start mod-free first. 740477 fixes Klei-account-linked skins being unavailable on dedicated servers; if it persists, re-login, verify the server build and online entitlement. For mod crashes inspect client_log/server_log and bisect. For rollback, stop cloud sync and preserve local/cloud copies before selecting by timestamp.

What changed in this version

  1. Build 740477 is a small Klei hotfix. The Tesla Coil Helm skin is renamed Arc Welded Helm, its Belongings icon is corrected, and Klei-account-linked items can again be used on dedicated servers. It does not introduce a new survival system, character balance pass or world content, so post-update checks should focus on the skin name/icon, account entitlement and dedicated-server use. Changes from adjacent Cawnival, minigame, boss or other hotfix builds are deliberately not attributed to 740477.
