- Mac-only and most valuable inside Apple's pro-video workflow; not an editor; many format parameters make noncompliant outputs possible; distributed processing depends on consistent networking, paths and permissions; some newer features exclude older systems or Intel.
Installation steps
- Compressor 5.3 requires macOS 15.6+, 8GB RAM and about 1.2GB free space; ProRes RAW needs a Metal-capable Mac. Some HEVC, Apple Immersive and multi-media-engine features require specific Apple silicon models.
- Finish active jobs before installing or updating, and back up the app plus custom settings from ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Settings. Test format, color space, captions, audio channels and destination with a short clip first.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, stop the queue and back up custom presets, destinations, watch folders and distributed-processing settings. Quit, move Compressor from Applications to Trash, and reinstall from the Mac App Store if needed.
- For troubleshooting Library data, archive Compressor/Settings first; never delete the only copy of a custom encoding preset. Remove legacy Apple Qmaster data only by following Apple's support procedure.
Common errors and fixes
- Cannot submit or a job fails: verify source media, output permissions, free space, destination-disk format and Pro Video Formats; create a new batch with known-good short media to isolate the cause.
- Missing media extension: update macOS, Compressor and Pro Video Formats, and verify camera plug-ins and file integrity.
- Distributed processing: every node must access the same path. If automatic sharing fails on a network volume or ExFAT, disable it and mount the source manually on each node.
- For repeated crashes or queue corruption, disconnect peripherals/plug-ins, back up settings, reset the Compressor folder/preferences and restart. Never remove cache during active encoding.

- Compressor 5.3 (June 30, 2026) adds an immersive metadata viewer, 180° APMP encoding, anaglyph stereoscopic preview, 5.1 AAC for Apple Devices and HEVC data-rate limits on Apple silicon, plus fixes for Photos imports, spatial metadata and preview crashes after missing media returns.
