Description
ASYLUM is an ambitious first-person horror adventure casting you into the hallucinatory setting of the Hanwell Mental Institute. As an ex-patient suffering bizarre visions, you must explore the intricate layout of the building, research its past history, and march towards a shocking conclusion.
With influences ranging from Peter Cushing to Lucio Fulci, ASYLUM has been meticulously crafted with a strong focus on storytelling and atmosphere. Visit countless tenebrous environments, make your way through a towering, lifelike mental hospital, and solve compelling puzzles to find the answers you seek.
We poured our heart and soul into creating an involving and endlessly rewarding adventure. If you love the kind of slow-burning horror with an old-school sensibility that creeps upon you, ASYLUM will be an unforgettable experience.
• A mind-bending original storyline that we somehow managed to keep secret during 15 years of production.
• Around 10 hours of gameplay — and that’s without learning all the dark secrets!
• An atmosphere so engrossing you will almost smell the stench of decrepitude and putrefaction around you.
• Exciting challenges rewarding your wit and observation.
• Memorable soundtrack inspired by 80s horror films and quite a bit of John Carpenter.
• No jump scares! OK, maybe just a frightening handful that will hit you when you least expect them.
• Diegetic interface and other buzz words.

Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who enjoy Scratches-style old-school adventures, slow-burn horror, investigation of a huge enclosed place and document-led storytelling. Those needing constant combat, navigation markers or Chinese/Japanese/Korean in-game UI should be cautious. Inspect each area in a fixed order: entrance, readable documents, item hotspots, mechanism, exit; keep brief notes for important doors/puzzles to avoid confusion in similar corridors. Use lower shadows/resolution on baseline Intel/8 GB, and target 60 FPS on Apple Silicon/16 GB. Safe order: dual backup; 1.5.0/SHA-256; fresh Bink movie; resolution/FPS; investigation/save; old chapter; restore cloud sync.
Pros
- Hanwell’s large, coherent hospital layout uses wards, corridors, archives and machinery to tell the story without constant combat. Roughly ten hours of main progress still leaves optional secrets, rewarding observation, document reading and item puzzles. Slow-burn horror, an 80s/John Carpenter-inspired score and restrained jump scares suit atmosphere/investigation players. Version 1.5.0 materially improves resources, movies, loading and frame rate. Apple Silicon and Intel are both official, with clear 8/16-GB Mac tiers, Steam Cloud and 19 achievements.
Cons
- The pace is deliberately slow, and long corridors, repeated document inspection and small hotspots may frustrate action/rapid-feedback players. First-person movement, dark scenes and a handful of sudden scares can still cause discomfort. Autosave limits arbitrary rollback, so retain a chapter copy before puzzle-heavy sections. The site’s 11.23-GB package already exceeds the official 10-GB install figure; download, mounting and extraction require extra room. Older Intel/8 GB and minimum graphics call for conservative settings, while 16 GB/stronger graphics are preferable. Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean are not official interfaces, so the five-language editorial does not replace in-game localization.
Installation steps
- This page covers ASYLUM 1.5.0. Official Mac minimums are macOS 11 Big Sur, Apple Silicon or Intel 2.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Radeon R9 M295X-class graphics and 10 GB storage. The recommendation is macOS 12 Monterey, Apple Silicon or Intel 3.8 GHz, 16 GB RAM and Radeon Pro 5300M-class graphics. The site source package is about 11.23 GB, so download/extraction needs more headroom than the official install figure. Back up Steam Cloud/local chapter saves, clues/notes, graphics, volume, subtitles and controls, then record 1.5.0/SHA-256. On a fresh save, validate the opening movie, English subtitles, first-person movement, investigation hotspots, items and autosave before loading old progress.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, wait for autosave in a quiet scene; do not force-quit during a door movie, puzzle mechanism or chapter transition. Separately back up chapters, items, read documents, clues, 19-achievement progress, graphics/frame rate, audio, subtitles and controls, retaining 1.5.0/SHA-256. Never delete cloud and local copies together. Reinstall with cloud sync temporarily off, then verify Bink opening/cutscene playback, default resolution, the 60-FPS desktop default, system-language detection, investigation and saving on a fresh game. Continue from a copied old save, and re-enable cloud only after chapter/items are correct; resolve conflicts with the copy whose time and progress are unambiguous.
Common errors and fixes
- For black, flashing or repeated door movies, confirm 1.5.0/SHA-256, disable overlays and reload the latest save. Version 1.5.0 moved movies to Bink and fixed a brief closed-door frame before walking. If resolution/frame-rate menus behave incorrectly, restore defaults and restart; the patch improved automatic calculation and defaults desktop to 60 FPS. For low performance, reduce resolution, shadows and post-processing; treat 8-GB/older Intel as minimum and raise settings on 16-GB/stronger Apple Silicon. For an unresponsive hotspot, leave inspection, realign and reload autosave rather than click rapidly. Restart if first-launch language is wrong; 1.5.0 fixes detection. Of the site’s five target languages, only English is an official game language; Chinese/Japanese/Korean pages are editorial guidance, not in-game localization. The invalid Mac-button tutorial was removed in 1.5.0.
What changed in this version
- Official patch 1.5.0 is codenamed “You’ve always been the caretaker.” Extensive resource optimization reduces download/disk footprint and improves loading and frame rate. All cutscenes/movies use lighter Bink format to avoid platform-specific playback issues. Default resolution/frame-rate calculation was fixed, desktop defaults to 60 FPS, and first-launch system-language detection was corrected. It also fixes a closed-door flash in door movies, a Low Risk corridor door, several German/Spanish strings, and removes an inappropriate Mac tutorial showing nonexistent buttons. The official build string is 1.5.0 and can be tested with CTRL+V. Acceptance covers this exact scope and excludes content above the site build.
