Editor-checked details
Recommended for Baldur’s Gate-style isometric CRPGs, lore-heavy writing, party builds and consequential choices. Beginners should use Normal/RTwP with auto-pause on enemy spotted, low health and cast completion; learn accuracy/defences/control before turn-based or higher difficulty. Enter White March from a separate mid-campaign save to protect level/story pacing. Intel follows the old 4 GB/discrete-GPU floor; 8 GB is practical. Validate Apple silicon unmodded. Safe order: three saves; 3.9.5/SHA-256; new-game combat/transition; DLC; language pack last. Compare Pillars II: Deadfire or Divinity: Original Sin 2.
Pros
- Six races, eleven classes, backgrounds, attributes, skills, reputation and factions create deep builds with quest consequences. Painted pre-rendered scenes, extensive prose and coherent lore preserve classic isometric CRPG character. Combat supports real-time-with-pause or turn-based, with difficulty/Story Mode spanning narrative to tactics. Companions have personal quests; White March adds high-level challenges and Maneha. Stronghold, Od Nua, crafting, reputation and exploration sustain a long campaign. Steam Cloud, achievements and developer commentary add replay value.
Cons
- Rules, damage/defence, statuses, skills and heavy prose impose a steep learning curve; character creation gives newcomers little context. High-difficulty RTwP needs micro, while turn-based greatly lengthens routine fights. Main story, side quests, White March and Od Nua can overload journal/party management. Official Mac specifications are old, with no Apple-silicon or modern-macOS guidance; legacy Unity may show scaling, loading or graphics faults. Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean are unsupported; unofficial packs can have missing glyphs/layout/version conflicts.
Installation steps
- This page covers Pillars of Eternity 3.9.5. Official Mac minimum: OS X 10.6.3 64-bit, Intel i5-540M 2.53 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Radeon HD 6750M/GeForce GT 330M and 14 GB. Recommended: OS X 10.9, i5 3.40 GHz, 8 GB, R9 M290X/GTX 775M 2 GB. Reserve 25 GB. Back up Steam Cloud, manual/auto/quick saves, character, party, stronghold, quest branches, White March progress, mods and language packs; record 3.9.5/SHA-256. On an unmodded new game test creation, real-time-with-pause/turn-based, combat, area transition, save/reload and DLC detection before copying the main save. No Apple-silicon tier is published; check legacy Unity rendering, mouse zoom and long loads.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, return to safety, make a manual save and wait for Steam Cloud; do not rely only on auto/quick saves. Separately back up campaign saves, exported characters, stronghold, both White March parts, Deadfire Pack, mod list/versions, language files, bindings and 3.9.5/SHA-256. Keep three differently dated saves. Reinstall without mods/language packs, load a copy in a hub, fight once, cross an area, save and restart. Confirm party, quests, reputation, items, stronghold and DLC before restoring add-ons one by one; preserve both copies on cloud conflict.
Common errors and fixes
- For stuck loads or area-transition crashes, copy the save, disable mods/language packs, verify DLC/3.9.5 and test an earlier manual save; never overwrite the sole copy repeatedly. For black screen, pink materials or zoom faults, lower resolution, disable overlays and check legacy Unity/GPU compatibility. If combat timing feels wrong, confirm real-time-with-pause versus turn-based; action economy/status duration differs. If White March is absent, verify Definitive Edition/DLC entitlement and installation, then enter from suitable main-story progress. Missing glyphs/dialogue layout usually comes from unofficial translations—restore English. On Apple silicon, isolate Rosetta/mod/background load with a clean save.
What changed in this version
- The site labels this build 3.9.5, but no public official itemized changelog maps exactly to that number, so fixes are not invented and higher version numbers are excluded. Verifiable Definitive Edition scope is the base game, The White March Parts I/II, free Deadfire Pack and Royal Edition content. White March II concludes the northern story, raises the cap 14→16, adds Story Mode, stronghold improvements, Barbarian companion Maneha, expanded Athletics/Survival, streamlined action bar/combat feedback and optional knockout injuries. Validate displayed 3.9.5, DLC detection, level-16 cap, Maneha, stronghold and save reload.
