Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who enjoy INSIDE-style environmental narrative, compact indie games and physics puzzles. On a first run, avoid guides and instead watch background silhouettes, mechanism cycles, audio cues and movable objects. After repeated failure, separate the problem into position, timing and action rather than simply moving faster. Headphones improve spatial cues, though players sensitive to spiders or child death should review the content warning. Safe validation order: backup; 1.3.3/SHA-256; OS/chip; fresh save; keyboard/controller; movement/grab; physics mechanisms; checkpoints; Game Center; restore progress.
Pros
- Monochrome silhouettes, fog, lighting and sparse sound form an unusually coherent audiovisual language, conveying a boy’s search for his sister with almost no dialogue. Movement, jump and grab are recombined through weight, ropes, water, electricity, spiders and industrial mechanisms; the controls are simple while observation and timing remain demanding. Frequent checkpoints make experimentation quick and the campaign avoids lengthy exposition. An Apple Design Award winner with more than 100 awards, it remains a landmark in environmental storytelling and physics puzzles.
Cons
- The main path is short; replay value comes mostly from hidden collectibles, achievements and faster solutions, not branches or character builds. A few traps reveal their rules through failure, so sudden deaths and repeated attempts can frustrate. The story and ending are deliberately ambiguous. Spiders, child death, dismemberment and oppressive sound remain disturbing despite the silhouette presentation. The current Mac App Store build lists English only, without Chinese, Japanese or Korean menus.
Installation steps
- This page covers channel version 1.3.3. Confirm macOS 10.13 or later before installation. The official Mac App Store lists about 84.5 MB, while the channel archive is about 91.7 MB; leave room for saves and record the installer SHA-256. LIMBO is a monochrome silhouette physics-puzzle platformer. With a new save, test movement, jumping, grabbing, mechanisms, death/checkpoint recovery, keyboard or controller input, and Game Center achievements. Official Steam metadata identifies macOS 64-bit, Apple-silicon and notarized support, so M1/M2/M3/M4 can use the native path; Intel remains supported. The current Mac App Store language field lists English only, although the game has almost no dialogue and tells its story through environments, motion and sound.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, reach a stable checkpoint, return to the menu, and allow local saves and Game Center to finish syncing. Do not force-quit during a death sequence, moving mechanism, or checkpoint indicator. Back up saves, the 1.3.3 installer and SHA-256 before removing the app. After reinstalling, use a fresh save to test movement, grabbing, death/respawn and checkpoint loading before restoring old progress, so a damaged preference is not mistaken for an application fault.
Common errors and fixes
- For a black screen or failed launch, confirm 1.3.3, file integrity, macOS 10.13+ permissions, then restart at the default resolution. On M1–M4, confirm that the Apple-silicon native binary is used; Rosetta is not required for the proper build. If a controller is ignored, verify it in macOS, restore default mappings and rule out Bluetooth latency. Repeated deaths usually mean a trap cycle, physics weight or environmental clue has been missed, not that the save is corrupt. Spiders, parasites, industrial traps and silhouetted dismemberment, impalement and death can be disturbing. English menus are expected for the current store build, not evidence of missing language files.
What changed in this version
- The official Mac 1.3.3 note states only “improvements and minor bug fixes.” No itemized list is public, so no specific level, visual or performance change is invented. Record 1.3.3 and SHA-256, then retest launch, movement/grab, physics puzzles, mechanism timing, checkpoints, keyboard/controller input and Game Center.
