Initiater is an easy to use small macOS OCR (Optical Character Recognition) app that extracts and recognizes any non-editable text on your Mac computer’s screen. As an extra feature, it can turn graphic files into editable text.
Initiater is a small app which lives in menu bar, it’s accessible whenever you need it. The app is convenient to use and makes extracting text from your images, scanned documents, or even videos easy.

Select with a mouse any part of the image, photo, document, or anything on the screen, and the app will process and recognizes any text within this selection. Grabbed part of the screen and having any text in that area be instantly recognized and copied to clipboard or shown in a small window.

Workflow: confirm capture rights; close unrelated sensitive windows; choose the language; capture a tight region in Normal; retry with Best and a clearer source; paste into a plain-text editor; verify digits, proper names, punctuation and line breaks; preserve source and corrected text; record review and manifest/SHA-256; clear the clipboard. macOS Live Text suits occasional system use; OwlOCR/LensOCR offer fuller OCR; ABBYY FineReader or Adobe Acrobat better suit batch documents and searchable PDF.

- It returns plain text without tables, hierarchy, typography, coordinates or full layout and does not create searchable PDFs. Accuracy varies with language support, macOS, type size, contrast, skew and compression; on-device does not mean correct. Region capture suits small selections, not batch PDFs, long documents, watched folders or team review. Screen-recording permission is broad and other apps may read the clipboard, so minimise and clear sensitive captures. The App Store lists in-app purchases, so some note/Pro behaviour may depend on entitlement. The developer has not declared accessibility support.
Installation steps
- Initiater 1.1.4 requires macOS 11 or later and runs natively on Intel and Apple M-series Macs. Grant only permissions actually requested, such as screen recording. Test Capture Text, Capture Image, clipboard copy and text-file save with a clear non-sensitive sample. Select the recognition language to match the source; available languages can vary with macOS. Normal mode suits clean text, while Best mode is preferable for low contrast, skewed or old scans. Test PNG/JPG/JPEG/BMP/TIFF/PSD import. Compare OCR character by character with the source before using contracts, amounts, serial numbers or code.
Uninstallation steps
- Before removal, export retained captures, text files and screenshots; neither in-app history nor the clipboard is an archive. For important OCR, preserve the source image, recognition language, Normal/Best mode, reviewer and date. Create a manifest and SHA-256 for source and delivered text; edited text needs its own hash. Clear sensitive capture history and clipboard content, revoke screen-recording permission, disable launch at login, then remove the app. Reopen the offline archive and sample amounts, dates, names and identifiers before deleting any sole copy.
Common errors and fixes
- If region capture fails, screen-recording permission may be missing or the app may need relaunch after approval. A dead shortcut often conflicts with macOS Screenshot, an input method or another menu-bar utility. A second-capture issue existed in older releases; if it recurs, restart the menu-bar process and reset the shortcut. For poor OCR, select the right language, crop clutter, enlarge text and use Best. Handwriting, curved text, low-resolution video, tables and complex layout are not guaranteed. Manually verify 0/O, 1/l/I, 5/S, 8/B, punctuation and decimals. If clipboard paste is empty, save plain text. Convert failing PSD/TIFF to PNG in Preview. DRM/security-protected screens may reject capture and must not be bypassed.
What changed in this version
- The published 1.1.4 note says only “a small refresh”; no unverifiable feature is added. macOS 15 Sequoia compatibility, UI improvement and fixes belong to 1.1.3; Capture Text/Image menu items and translation improvements to 1.1.2; additional languages and the second-capture fix appeared earlier. Menu-bar capture, offline on-device OCR, image import, clipboard/text saving, Normal/Best and captured notes are existing capabilities, not 1.1.4 additions. Regress Normal/Best with clean and degraded samples, two consecutive captures, shortcuts and offline recognition.
