Description
Herald is a choice-driven adventure game set during an alternate 19th century in which the West is united as a colonial superpower: the Protectorate.
Help tell the story of Devan Rensburg, a man of mixed heritage who became steward on board of the HLV Herald, a merchant ship set for his country of birth.
As Devan it is your job to keep the peace among the crew and passengers by resolving their daily squabbles. Set during a time of widespread inequality and injustice, you are challenged to uncover a great mystery that surrounds the Herald’s perilous voyage.
Together, Herald Book I & II have around 4 hours of gameplay. Each Book has its own contained story. Book III & IV will tell new stories of Devan’s adventures and will be released as episodic content at a later date.
Key Features
• A branching narrative that changes depending on how you decide to play. Do you choose to be bold and stand up for the downtrodden, or would pleasing the elite be the safer and smarter choice?
• Uncover all of the secrets aboard the merchant clipper Herald, as you explore its many nooks and crannies.
• The Herald is a microcosm of 19th century society. The crew and passengers all have their own dark secrets and often use sly coercion to convince Devan to help them. But who can you trust?
• Herald’s diverse cast of characters is brought to life by beautifully animated portraits, and the performances of thirteen talented voice actors.
• Herald is set during an alternate 1857 in which the West has been united as a single global superpower: the Protectorate. Governed not by kings but by an elected ‘Lord Protector’, the Protectorians believe they are morally superior. But are they?
• A gripping tale about finding your place in a world divided by race, class and culture.

Editor-checked details
Recommended for players who enjoy interactive fiction, alternate history, maritime mystery and ethical choices about power, can read English and accept mature themes. Do not treat each dispute as having one correct answer; decide which relationships/values Devan protects and keep a separate save before pivotal choices. Record characters, rooms, clues and promises while exploring, and archive each book-end save. Safe order: content warning; backup; 2.0.4.rc1/SHA-256; temporary save; English subtitle/voice; choice; scene/book transition; save reload; long save. M1 and Intel are both official, but validate display and audio first.
Pros
- All four books now complete Devan Rensburg’s arc as steward aboard the HLV Herald rather than stopping at the old midpoint. The alternate-1857 Protectorate places colonialism, race, class, culture and unequal power inside a merchant-ship microcosm; daily disputes are character conflicts that alter trust and later choices. Branching narrative lets Devan defend the oppressed, please elites or seek compromise, supporting multiple endings. Ship exploration, hidden clues, animated portraits and full English performances by 18 actors strengthen the drama. Official support includes single-player, 59 achievements, Cloud, controllers and Family Sharing.
Cons
- The game is English-only for interface, voice and subtitles. Its dialogue, political vocabulary and implied tone require strong English from all five target-language readers; article localization cannot replace game localization. Themes emphasize oppression and powerlessness and include emotional/physical violence, suggestive content, some strong language and suicide depiction. Interaction centers on conversation, point-and-click exploration and relationship judgment, so players expecting combat, resource management or elaborate traditional puzzles may find it sparse. Some consequences arrive books later, making replay costly. Recommended graphics examples are old; M1 is explicit, but other Apple chips and high-DPI displays still need validation.
Installation steps
- This page covers Herald: Complete Edition 2.0.4.rc1, containing all four books of Devan Rensburg’s story rather than the old two-book release. Official Mac minimum is macOS 10.13+, dual-core 2.4 GHz or Apple M1, 2 GB RAM, 1 GB VRAM/Intel HD 4600 and 3 GB storage; Intel i7 4700MQ 3.4 GHz or M1 and 4 GB RAM are recommended, at 16:9/16:10. The game has English interface, full audio and subtitles only; these five localized notes do not localize it. Back up Cloud/local choice history, record 2.0.4.rc1/SHA-256 and use a temporary save to validate choices, ship exploration, subtitles, voice, book transitions, autosave and reload.
Uninstallation steps
- Before uninstalling, finish the current dialogue and wait for the autosave indicator; never force-quit during a choice, scene/book transition, cutscene or Cloud sync. Back up every slot, book progress, key decisions, relationships, discovered clues and subtitle/audio/display settings, recording 2.0.4.rc1/SHA-256, Mac/OS and timestamps. After reinstalling, compare Cloud/local times and use a copy to enter the current book, complete dialogue, explore the HLV Herald, make one choice and quit/reload. Never overwrite completed progress with a blank Book One save.
Common errors and fixes
- For launch failure or black screen, confirm macOS 10.13+, 64-bit, 2 GB RAM, 3 GB storage and graphics, verify files/permissions and retry once in a 16:9/16:10 window; preserve logs/model. Apple M1 is explicitly in both minimum and recommended CPU rows, so do not misdiagnose every issue as unsupported silicon. For subtitle/voice drift, restore English, default audio output and subtitle settings, then enter from the prior checkpoint. If a choice did not register as expected, reload before overwriting and let dialogue finish. For a stuck book transition, compare save times and free space. Missing non-English language is not a bug. Content includes emotional/physical violence, suggestive themes, strong language and depiction of suicide; confirm comfort first.
What changed in this version
- The channel build is 2.0.4.rc1. Verifiable official notes state that Unity was upgraded to address security vulnerability CVE-2025-59489, with a corresponding macOS 64-bit depot. The note does not claim story, choice, voice, subtitle, save or Mac-performance changes, so none is extrapolated. Validate the menu build, access to all four books, old save, dialogue choices, scene/book transition, English voice/subtitles, 59-achievement state, Cloud and quit/reload.
