Description
Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories. You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies.
In the beginning you will find yourself chopping trees, mining ores and crafting mechanical arms and transport belts by hand, but in short time you can become an industrial powerhouse, with huge solar fields, oil refining and cracking, manufacture and deployment of construction and logistic robots, all for your resource needs.
However this heavy exploitation of the planet’s resources does not sit nicely with the locals, so you will have to be prepared to defend yourself and your machine empire.
Join forces with other players in cooperative Multiplayer, create huge factories, collaborate and delegate tasks between you and your friends.
Add mods to increase your enjoyment, from small tweak and helper mods to complete game overhauls, Factorio’s ground-up Modding support has allowed content creators from around the world to design interesting and innovative features.
While the core gameplay is in the form of the freeplay scenario, there are a range of interesting challenges in the form of Scenarios.
If you don’t find any maps or scenarios you enjoy, you can create your own with the in-game Map Editor, place down entities, enemies, and terrain in any way you like, and even add your own custom script to make for interesting gameplay.

Editor-checked details
Highly recommended for automation, logistics, engineering optimisation and long-form sandbox fans; the official demo is an excellent fit test. Use normal sprites/low compression and a smaller map on older Intel Macs; Apple silicon with 16 GB better suits large bases and high resolution. Workflow: reserve 15 GB; back up saves/blueprints/mod-list; record 2.0.77 and SHA-256; test a mod-free copy; check power/trains/robots/rocket; verify same-version multiplayer; restore mods one by one. Compare Shapez 2 for lighter factories, RimWorld for colony stories, or Satisfactory for first-person 3D automation after checking Mac support.
Pros
- Starting with mining, smelting and belts, it expands into circuits, oil, railways, robots, nuclear power and rockets, turning complex production chains into observable, measurable systems. Blueprints, copy/paste, train schedules, logistics and a strong mod API keep hundred-hour factories refactorable; co-op, map editor and scenarios add longevity. Deterministic simulation and profiling tools are excellent. Intel and Apple-silicon Macs have official configurations, with English, Simplified/Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean interfaces.
Cons
- The learning curve is steep: rail signals, circuits, fluids, ratios, quality and space logistics can require prolonged reference work. Extreme freedom invites endless scope growth, and rebuilding a large factory takes time. Huge bases are usually CPU/memory/script-mod bound rather than GPU bound; a 2016 Mac/8 GB suits normal sprites and smaller scale, while 2020 Apple silicon/16 GB is recommended. Space Age is paid, and expansion saves, mods and servers must match. Mod updates can break production or loading, while multiplayer requires exact version parity.
Installation steps
- This page covers Factorio 2.0.77. Official Mac minimum is OS X 10.10 Yosemite, a 2016 Mac, 8 GB RAM and 5 GB storage for normal sprite resolution, low-quality compression and 1080p; recommended is 2020 Apple silicon, 16 GB, 10 GB and high-resolution sprites. The site package is about 6.14 GB, so keep 15 GB free. Back up saves, blueprint library, mod directory/versions and Space Age entitlement; record 2.0.77 and SHA-256. First disable mods and use a copy to test mining, belts/inserters, logistic/construction robots, trains, rocket silo, save/load and multiplayer. Restore mods dependency-by-dependency and enable high-resolution sprites only with adequate memory.
Uninstallation steps
- Pause in a safe factory location, make a manual save and quit after disk writing completes. Copy every save/autosave, blueprint library, mods, mod-list/mod-settings, screenshots and server configuration; label 2.0.77, map seed, playtime, mod versions, Space Age, last-save time and SHA-256. Load the copy offline, check power, train signals, robot network and a rocket launch, then save again. Disable cloud sync only after quitting and retain both conflict copies. Do not remove user data when uninstalling. After reinstalling, create and save a mod-free map before restoring a copy; never overwrite the original if mods or expansion are missing.
Common errors and fixes
- For launch failure or missing sprites, verify 2.0.77, space/SHA-256, remove mods and use normal sprites/low-quality compression. Eight GB is minimum; huge high-resolution factories benefit from 16 GB. If an old save reports missing/invalid mods, preserve its mod-list and exact versions and restore dependencies rather than overwriting the only save. Low UPS commonly comes from huge logistic networks, fluids, trains, enemies or script mods; inspect time usage and isolate sections. Multiplayer server, client, mods and settings must match exactly; 2.0.77 fixes a custom-input/in_gui desync. If a rocket silo or ammo inserter stalls, confirm 2.0.77 and rebuild the affected entity. Blueprint-library scrolling under latency is also fixed in this release.
What changed in this version
- Wube released 2.0.77 as stable. It fixes cargo-pod clipping on rockets; turret-inserter deadlock when ammunition spoils mid-swing; rocket-silo deadlock after mod changes; a crash when certain entities die without a source; a shattered-planet wait condition not resetting after manual go-to; personal blueprint-book scrolling under multiplayer latency; a custom-input/in_gui desync; script-disabled orbital logistic points; loader stack-size override crashes; and loading Space Age saves after prototypes are removed. It also adds several Lua reads for quality effects and multipliers.
